The Boston medical intelligencer began as a journal primarily for those in the medical field, but eventually came to be directed to the public as well, its chief object being to promote health by pointing out causes of disease and means of prevention and cure. It contained accounts of cases and articles on health, on various diseases and cures, and on improvements and discoveries in medical science. In addition, a wide variety of medical miscellany -- local news, biographical sketches, information on hospitals, society proceedings, critical notices -- and some nonmedical material were included. Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900
