This was a solid read until I got to the end. I was so disappointed in the cliched way that King wrapped up this story that I knocked the rating down a whole star. I could have given you the broad strokes of the last 100 pages with absolutely no knowledge of the plot except "a man goes back in time to change a historic event and he meets a girl while there." I felt very angry that I had spent 30 hours of my life listening to a story that had such promise and ended so poorly.
The story rambles quite a bit. I guess that's to be expected when the audiobook is 30 hours long, but I don't know that I would have stuck with it had I not been driving across the country for 3 days. All of the detail is meticulously researched, though and King succeeds in creating a very strong sense of place.
I particularly enjoyed reading about Jake's time in Jody, TX. Mimi Corcoran, the school librarian in Jody is one of my all time favorite characters in a novel. That middle chunk of the book could have been pulled out and stood alone as a great read.
Overall, this is a well-written book, but I don't think the enjoyment is equal to the effort required to finish all 850 pages.
