PREFACE.

THE want of a compendious work to supply students of the Spanish language with materials for reading, and to render them acquainted with some of the best Spanish writers, ancient and modern, induced the Editor of this compilation to publish, some few years ago, a manual of Spanish extracts under the title of "Modelos de Literatura." It was confined to prose selections; but the work, though incomplete, had its utility. It is now, however, out of print, and the Editor has been anxious to supply in the present volume the parts that were wanting in the former one. The following pages will therefore comprise selections from the best Spanish writers of prose, drama, and poetry, from the 15th century to the present day; with notes in English at the end explaining the difficult passages in the text.

In the order of arrangement of the subjects it has been considered desirable to commence with extracts from the writings of the living authors in each department of prose, drama, and poetry respectively, and gradually to recede to those of the earlier ages, in order that the student may exercise himself first in the style of language required for daily and practical use, and accustom himself gradually to the more ancient and intricate.
