to others, but to deepen the power and harmonize the development of your own

soul.

As some rare perfume in a vase of clay

Pervades it with a fragrance not its own,So, when love dwelleth in a mortal soul,

All heaven's own sweetness seems around it thrown.

Eleventh Day.

"AND herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God and toward men."

For what is your life? To redeem the time, to flee from evil, to know whose you are, and whom you serve; to bend your own will in cheerful acquiescence to the Supreme Will. To do justly, love mercy, walk humbly, with conscience for your guide, your stimulus, and your reward.

But, above all, the victory is most sure
For him who, seeking faith by virtue, strives
To yield entire submission to the law

Of conscience; conscience reverenced and obeyed,
As God's most intimate presence in the soul,
And his most perfect image in the world.

Twelfth Bay.

"BEHOLD, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy."

Examine frequently in the day, or at least in the morning and evening, whether you have your soul in your keeping, or whether some passion or inquietude has not robbed you of it. If it should be gone astray, seek after it before you do any thing else, and bring it back quietly to the presence of God, subjecting all your affections and desires to the obedience and direction of his divine will.

Still let thy love point out my way;

How wondrous things that love hath wrought!
Still lead me lest I go astray;

Direct my word, inspire my thought;

And if I fall, soon may I hear

Thy voice, and know thy love is near.

Thirteenth Day.

"THE light of the body is the eye; if, therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light."

Simplicity is an uprightness of soul that has no reference to self; it looks straight onward in its path, losing no time to contemplate the steps it has already taken. This deliverance of the soul from all useless, selfish, unquiet cares, brings to it a peace and freedom that are unspeakable; this is true simplicity. It is easy to perceive at the first glance how glorious it is;

but experience alone can make us comprehend the enlargement of heart that it produces. We are then like a child in the arms of its parent; we wish nothing more; we fear nothing; we are not anxious about what others think of us; all our motions are free, graceful, happy.

His conscience knows no secret stings,
While grace and joy combine
To form a life whose holy springs

Are hidden and divine.

He waits in secret on his God,
His God in secret sees;
Let earth be all in arms abroad,
He dwells in heavenly peace.

Fourteenth Bay.

"BLESSED are they which do hunger and

thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled."

Want has been the great educator of the world, and oh! if we only wanted to be righteous. But we do not want to be holy and religious; we do not want to be meek and humble. If men wanted to be benevolent and charitable, they would be so; they would possess these noble qualities, if they wanted them, as surely as they contrive the mechanical enginery and tools they require. Some appear to feel actually wronged by being called to exercises of religion and charity, which, if they had the hunger and thirst Christ speaks of, they would thankfully lay hold of as their sustenance, and feed on as the bread of life that came down from heaven.

O, be not faithless! with the morn
Cast thou abroad thy grain!

At noontide faint not thou forlorn!
At evening sow again.

Blessed are they, whate'er betide,
Who thus all waters sow beside.
