CHAPTER L.

1 AND Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and 2 kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians 3 to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. And forty days were fulfilled for him; (for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed:) and the Egyptians mourned for him 4 threescore and ten days. And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the 5 ears of Pharaoh, saying, My father made me swear, saying, Lo,

CHAP. L.-1 Fell upon his father's face.] I will go down with thee into Egypt (said God to Jacob), and I will also surely bring thee up again; and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. Ge. xlvi. 4. And thou shalt teach them (the words which I command you, said Moses) diligently unto thy children; and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. De. vi. 7, 8. Fathers provoke not your children to wrath; but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Ep. vi. 4. Wept upon him.] Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. Ge. xxiii. 2. Now Elisha was fallen sick of his sickness whereof he died; and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him, and wept over his face, and said, O my father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. 2 Ki. xiii, 14. And he (Jesus) cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly; and when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. Mar. v. 38, 39. Jesus wept (near the grave of Lazarus). Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him. John xi. 35, 36. Devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. Ac. viii. 2. I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not even as others which have no hope. I Th. iv. 13.

2 Embalmed Israel.] Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt. Ge. 1. 26. And they buried him (Asa) in his own sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours, and divers kinds of spices, prepared by the apothecaries' art: and they made a very great burning for him. 2 Chr. xvi. 14.

And

In that she hath poured this ointment on my body (said Jesus of the woman that anointed his head), she did it for my burial. Mat. xxvi. 12. She hath done what she could (said Jesus); she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Mar. xiv. 8. when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. Mar. xvi. 1. Upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. Lu. xxiv. 1. Then said Jesus, Let her alone; against the day of my burying hath she kept this. John xii. 7. And there came also Nicodemus (which at the first came to Jesus by night), and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes; about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes, with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. John xix. 39, 40.

3 Threescore and ten days.] When all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel. Nu. xx. 29. And she (the captive whom thou hast taken in war, and hast a desire to have her to wife) shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month; and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife. De. xxi. 13. The children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. De. xxxiv. 8.

4 The days of his mourning.] See verse 10. Joseph spake, &c.] And he (Boaz) took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here and they sat down. Ru iv. 2.

Found grace.] And (Abraham) said (to the three angels), My lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant. Ge. xviii. 3. and com. 5 Made me swear.] And the time drew nigh that Israel must die; and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have

I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again. And 6 Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with 7 him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, And all the house of Joseph, 8 and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and

found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt; but I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying-place. And he said, I will do as thou hast said. And he said, Swear unto me. And he sware unto him. Ge. xlvii. 29, 30, 31.

Lo, I die.] And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die; and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land, unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. Ge. 1. 24. And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die; but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers. Ge. xlviii. 21. And he (Jacob) charged them (his sons), and said unto them, I am to be gathered unto my people; bury me with my fathers, in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite: in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field of Ephron the Hittite, for a possession of a burying-place. Ge. xlix. 29, 30. I must die in this land (said Moses), I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over and possess that good land. De. iv. 22. Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done? And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand; and, lo, I must die. 1 Sa. xiv. 43.

I have digged for me, &c.] And they buried "him" ("Asa") in his own sepulchres which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours, and divers kinds of spices, prepared by the apothecaries' art: and they made a very great burning for him. 2 Chr. xvi. 14. What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, and that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock? Is. xxii. 16. And (Joseph of Arimathea) laid "it" ("the body of Jesus") in his own new tomb which he had hewn out in the rock, and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. Mat. xxvii. 60.

Bury me.] In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. VOL. I.

Ge. iii. 19. I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. Job xxx. 23. Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem: and there was none to bury them. Ps. lxxix. 3. If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial, I say that an untimely birth is better than he. Ec. vi. 3. Man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets. Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. Ec. xii. 5.7.

Let me go up, &c.] Another of his disciples said unto him (Jesus), Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. Mat. viii. 21, 22. And he (Jesus) said unto another, Follow me. he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. Lu. ix. 59, 60.

7 And with him went up.] And he (Abraham) brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people. xiv. 16.

Ge.

8 Only their little ones.] And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh ; and he said unto them, Go, serve the Lord your God: but who are they that shall go? And Moses said, We will go with our young, and with our old, with our sons, and with our daughters, with our flocks, and with our herds will we go; for we must hold a feast unto the Lord. Our cattle also shall go with us; there shall not an hoof be left behind; for thereof must we take to serve the Lord our God, &c. Ex. x. 8, 9. 26. Build you cities for your little ones (said Moses to the Reubenites, Gadites, and half tribe of Manasseh), and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth. And the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth: our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead. But thy servants will pass over (Jordan), every man armed for war, before

9 their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen : and it was a 10 very great company. And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his 11 father seven days. And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it 12 was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan. And his sons 13 did unto him according as he commanded them: For his sons

the Lord to battle, as my lord saith. Nu. xxxii. 24-27.

9 Chariots and horsemen.] And he (Pharaoh) made him (Joseph) to ride in the second chariot which he had, and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. Ge. xli. 43. And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father to Goshen, and presented himself unto him. Ge. xlvi. 29. And he (Pharaoh) took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, and captains over every one of them (to pursue after the Israelites). And I, behold I (said God to Moses, who had cried unto him), will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them (the Israelites through the sea), and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. And the waters (which went back when Moses stretched out his hand over the sea) returned (when he had done the same) and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them: there remained not so much as one of them. Ex. xiv. 7. 17. 28. How then (said Rab-shakeh to the officers of Hezekiah) wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's (Sennacherib's) servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots, and for horsemen? 2 Ki. xviii. 24. I have compared thee, O my love (the Church of Christ), to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots. Can. i. 9.

10 Beyond Jordan.] See verse 11. These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan; in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red Sea. De. i. 1.

Seven days.] See verse 4. He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days. Nu. xix. 11. The children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. De. xxxiv. 8. And they (the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead) took their (Saul's and his sons') bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days. 1 Sa. xxxi. 13. David lamented with this lamentation over Saul, and over Jonathan his son. 2 Sa. i. 17. They (Job's friends) sat down with him upon the ground seven days and

seven nights, and none spake a word unto him; for they saw that his grief was very great. Job ii. 13. Devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him. Ac. viii. 2.

11 The Canaanites.] Canaan begat Sidon his firstborn, and Heth. And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as thou comest to Gerar unto Gaza, as thou goest unto Sodom and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha. Ge. x. 15. 19. There was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land. Ge. xiii. 7. And Abraham said unto him (his servant), Beware that thou bring not my son thither (to the land of the Canaanites) again. Ge. xxiv. 6. And Jacob said to (his sons) Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me (by their cruelty to the Shechemites) to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. Ge. xxxiv. 30.

Abel-mizraim.] Even unto the great stone of Abel (describing the cities of the Philistines) whereon they set down the ark of the Lord; which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua the Bethshemite. 1 Sa. vi. 18.

Beyond Jordan.] See verse 10. I pray thee (said Moses), let me go over and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and Lebanon. Get thee up (said the Lord) unto the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward, and northward, and southward, and eastward; and behold it with thine eyes, for thou shalt not go over this Jordan. De. iii. 25. 27. Are they not (mounts Gerizim and Ebal) on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in the champaign over against Gilgal, beside the plains of Moreh? De. xi. 30.

12 According as he commanded.] See Ge. xlvii. 29. and xlix. 29–32. and com. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Ex. xx. 12. Jacob and our fathers were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem. Ac. vii. 16. Children, obey your 7

carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a burying-place of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre. And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, 14 and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. And when Joseph's brethren saw that their 15 father was dead, they said, Joseph will paradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did 16 command before he died, saying, So shall ye say unto Joseph, 17 Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph

13 The cave of the field, &c.] See Ge. xxiii. 16, 17, 18; xxv. 9; xxxv. 27, 28, 29; xlix. 29, 30, 31. And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza; and Amon his son reigned in his stead. 2 Ki. xxi. 18.

15 Their father was dead.] And Esau hated Jacob his brother, because of the blessing wherewith his father had blessed him : and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand, then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. Ge. xxvii. 41, 42.

Joseph will peradventure hate, &c.] And he (Joseph) put them (his brethren) altogether into ward three days. Ge. xlii. 17. Upon them that are left alive of you (disobedient Jews), I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. Le. xxvi. 36. A dreadful sound is in his (the wicked man's) ears; in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him he believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. Job xv. 21, 22. There were they in great fear, for God is in the generation of the righteous. Ps. xiv. 5. There were they in great fear, where no fear was: for God hath scattered the bones of him that encampeth against thee thou hast put them to shame, because God hath despised them. Ps. liii. 5. The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are bold as a lion. Pr. xxviii. 1. These (the Gentiles) having not the law, are a law unto themselves: which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing, or else excusing one another. Ro. ii. 15.

16 Sent a messenger, &c.] The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. Pr. xxix. 25.

17 Forgive, I pray, &c.] Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Mat. vi. 12. 14, 15. So shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Mat. xviii. 35. Take heed to yourselves: if thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him: and if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him. Lu. xvii. 3, 4. Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ's sake, hath forgiven you. Ep. iv. 32. Put on therefore as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, if any man have a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Col. iii. 12, 13.

They did unto thee evil.] See verse 20. He looketh upon men; and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not: he will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. Job xxxiii. 27, 28. They intended evil against thee; they imagined an evil device which they are not able to perform. Ps. xxi. 11. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper; but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy. Pr. xxviii. 13. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed: the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Ja. v. 16.

The servants of the God of thy father.] Except the God of my father (said Jacob to Laban), the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away empty. Ge. xxxi. 42. The

18 wept when they spake unto him. And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy 19 servants. And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the 20 place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but

arms of his (Joseph's) hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; even by the mighty God of thy father who shall help thee. Ge. xlix. 25. Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Mat. x. 42. The King (in the description of the last judgment) shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Mat. xxv. 40. And when the ten heard "it" (the "ambitious suit" of Zebedee's sons), they began to be much displeased with James and John. Mar. x. 41. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men; especially unto them who are of the houshold of faith. As many as walk according to "this rule" ("the dependence on Christ only"), peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God. Ga. vi. 10. 16. Though I might be much bold in Christ, to enjoin thee that which is convenient, yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee; yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord. Philem. 8. 20.

Wept when they spake unto him.] And they (Joseph's brethren) said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us. And Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore behold also, his blood is required. And they knew not that Joseph understood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. Ge. xlii. 21-24. Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me I pray you; and they came near: and he said, I am Joseph your brother, whom ye sold into Egypt: now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life: it was not you that sent me hither, but God. Ge. xlv. 4, 5. 8.

18 Fell down before his face.] Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land (of Canaan). Ge. xxiii. 12. See Ge. xxxvii. 711. and com. &c. Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him, with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 6. Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house (for he was yet there), and they fell before him on

the ground. Ge. xliv. 14. Joseph said unto his brethren, I am Joseph; doth my father yet live? And his brethren could not answer him: for they were troubled at his presence. Ge. xlv. 3.

19 Fear not.] See Ge. xlv. 5. Be of good cheer (said Jesus to his disciples, as he walked on the sea) it is I; be not afraid. Mat. xiv. 27. But they (the apostles who heard that Jesus was risen, from the two disciples going to Emmaus) were terrified and affrighted (when Jesus himself stood in the midst of them), and supposed that they had seen a spirit: and he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Lu. xxiv. 37, 38.

For am I in the place of God.] And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel (who said, Give me children, or I die); and he said, Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? Ge. xxx. 3. To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence (saith God), their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. De. xxxii. 35. And it came to pass when the king of Israel (Jehoram) had read the letter (sent by the king of Syria, that Naaman might be cured of his leprosy), that he rent his clothes, and said, Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a man of his leprosy? 2 Ki. v. 7. Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked! and to princes, Ye are ungodly? How mach less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only. Job xxxiv. 18, 19. 29. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Ro. xii. 19. know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me; I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. He. x. 30.

20 Ye thought evil against me. e.] And when his (Joseph's) brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And when they saw him afar off (sent by his father to see whether it were well with his brethren, &c.), even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him, to slay him and they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh: come now
