And I will draw unto thee, to the river Kishon, Sisera the captain of Jabin's (king of Canaan's) army. And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kadesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet. Ju. iv. 6-10. Mat. iv. 13-16.

22 A fruitful bough.] And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb. And she conceived and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach. And she called his name Jo

even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall: The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and 23 hated him: But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his 24

And Joseph called the name of his firstborn Manasseh (i. e. forgetting), For God, said he, hath made me to forget all my toil and all my father's house. The angel which redeemed me from all evil bless the lads; and he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh. Ge. xlviii. 1. 5. 16. 20. See Nu. chap. xxxii. Let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph (said Moses), his glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns, with them he shall push the people together, to the ends of the earth. And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh. De. xxxiii. 16, 17. See Jos. chap. xvi. And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the Lord hath blessed me hitherto. And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee: and the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us. And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power, thou shalt not have one lot only. Jos. xvii. 14-17. Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season: his leaf also shall not wither, and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Ps. i. 1, 2, 3. Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord, that walketh in his ways, thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house. Thy children like olive plants round about thy table. 23 Archers.] When his (Joseph's) brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And when they saw him afar off (upon his being sent to them by his father), even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it. Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. And when she saw that he left his garment in her hand, she called unto the men of her house; and she laid up his garment by her until his lord (Potiphar) came home. And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant which thou hast brought unto us came in unto me to mock me and as I lifted up my voice, and cried, he left his garment with me and fled. And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king's prisoners were bound. Ge. xxxix. 7-20. We are verily guilty (said Joseph's brethren one to another), in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear. Ge. xlii. 21. Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked, &c. who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words. Ps. lxiv. 3. Thou hast thrust sore at me, that I might fall; but the Lord helped me. Ps. cxviii. 13. In the world (said Christ to his disciples) ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33. We must, through much tribulation, enter into the kingdom of God. 24 His bow abode in strength.] O God, strengthen my hands (said Nehemiah). Ne. vi. 9. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait I say on the Lord. Ps. xxvii. 14. The Lord is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed. Ps. xxviii. 8. I will sing of the mercies of the Lord for ever, with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. That ye

hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; 25 (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:) Even by the

longsuffering, with joyfulness. Col. i. 11. The Lord stood with me and strengthened me, that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear. 2 Ti. iv. 17.

Were made strong.] My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. Job xxix. 20. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great, It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like harts' feet, and setteth me upon my high places. Ps. xviii. 32-35. The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. Ps. xxxvii. 14, 15. Thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. Ps. xliv. 7. To his own master he standeth or falleth; yea, he shall be holden up, for God is able to make him stand. Ro. xiv. 4.

The mighty God of Jacob.] And God said unto him (Jacob), I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply; thy name is Jacob; thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name. Ge. xxxv. 10, 11. I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. Ex. iii. 6. I will love thee, O Lord my strength. As for God, his way is perfect. The word of the Lord is tried; he is a buckler to all those that trust in him; it is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect; he teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Ps. xviii. 1. 30. 32. 34. Lord, remember David and all his afflictions; how he sware unto the Lord, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob, Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed; I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids, until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob. Ps. cxxxii. 1-5. "Thou" (the "Church of Christ") shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings; and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty one of Jacob. Is. lx. 16.

The shepherd.] Be not grieved nor angry 4 Joseph to his brethren) with yourselves,

Now

that ye sold me hither; for God did send me before you to preserve life. And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. And there will I nourish thee (for yet there are five years of famine), lest thou, and thy houshold, and all that thou hast, come to poverty. Ge. xlv. 5. 7. 11. Joseph nourished his father and his brethren, and all his father's houshold with bread according to their families. Ge. xlvii. 12. therefore (said Joseph to his brethren), fear ye not: I will nourish you and your little ones; and he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. Ge. 1. 21. Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh (said Moses unto the Lord) set a man over the congregation, which may go out before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the Lord be not as sheep which have no shepherd. And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him. Na. xxvii. 16-18. Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded. De. xxxiv. 9. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord, it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, saying, Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan. Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you. There shall not a man be able to stand before you. Be strong and of good courage; that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded thee. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night; then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed; for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Jos. i. 1—9. See Jos. xxiv. Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel; thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that dwellest between the cherubims shine forth. Ps. lxxx. 1.

The stone of Israel.] He (the Lord) is the rock; his work is perfect; for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth, and without iniquity; just and right is he. De. xxxii. 4. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. Ps. cxviii. 22. Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, a tried stone, a sure foundation. Is. xxviii. 16. Behold

God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of

the stone that I have laid before Joshua (the high priest), upon one stone shall be seven eyes. Behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of the land in one day. Zec. iii. 9. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes. Mat. xxi. 42. Have ye not read this Scripture, The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner? Mar. xii. 10. What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Lu. xx. 17. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. iv. 11. Ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the houshold of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone. Ep. ii. 19, 20. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby; if so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God and precious; ye also as lively stones are built up, a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious; and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you, therefore, which believe he is precious; but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner; and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient, whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Pe. ii. 2-8.

25 The God of thy father.] Behold, the Lord stood above it (the ladder in Jacob's vision), and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac.

And

Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then shall the Lord be my God. Ge. xxviii. 13. 20, 21. Let us arise (said Jacob to his houshold), and go up to Beth-el, and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went. Ge. xxxv. 3. And he (the steward of Joseph's house) said (unto Joseph's brethren), Peace be to you, fear not; your God and the God of your father hath given you treasure in your sacks; I had your money. Ge. xliii. 23. Beware thou forget not the Lord thy God,

and say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God. De. viii. 17, 18. The Lord shall open unto thee (for thine obedience) his good treasure ; the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thine hand. And thou shalt lend unto many nations; and thou shalt not borrow. De. xxviii. 12. And this is the blessing wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death, &c. De. xxxiii. 1. Of Joseph he said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath, and for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun; and for the precious things put forth by the moon. And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills; and for the precious things of the earth, and fulness thereof, and for the good will of him who dwelt in the bush; let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren. De. xxxiii. 13 -16. His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns; with them he shall push the people together, to the ends of the earth. De. xxxiii. 17.

The Almighty.] I am the Almighty God (said the Lord to Abram when ninety years old); walk before me and be thou perfect. Ge. xvii. 1. And God said unto him (Jacob, in Beth-el,) I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply! Ge. xxxv. 11.

Blessings of heaven above.] And all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee (for thine obedience), if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field; blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep; blessed shall be thy basket and thy store; blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and when thou goest out. The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face; they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. And all the people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee; and the Lord shall make thee plenteous in goods, &c. &c. De. xxviii. 2-12. Of Joseph he (Moses) said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, &c. De. xxxiii. 13. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord will give grace and glory; no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. Ps. lxxxiv. 11. Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good,

the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the 26 womb: The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of thy progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of 27 the head of him that was separate from his brethren. Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and

and our land shall yield her increase. Ps. lxxxv. 12. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Mat. vi. 33. Let no man glory in men, for all things are your's, whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are your's, and ye are Christ's, and Christ is God's. 1 Co. iii. 21-23. Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. Eph. i. 3. My God shall supply all your need, according to his riches in glory, by Christ Jesus. Phi. iv. 19. Godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 1 Ti. iv. 8.

26 Have prevailed.] And he (Jacob) came near and kissed him: and he (Isaac) smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed. Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee. Be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee; and blessed be he that blesseth thee. Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above. And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother and it shall come to pass, when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. Ge. xxvii. 27. 29. 39, 40. God Almighty bless thee (said Isaac to Jacob), and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham. Is. liv. 10. And "they" ("Israel and Judah") shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they and their children, and their children's children for

ever. Moreover, I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. Ez. xxxvii. 25, 26. I (Jonah) went down to the bottoms of the mountains: the earth with her bars was about me for ever. Jon. ii. 6. He (the Almighty) stood, and measured the earth; he beheld and drove asunder the nations, and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. Hab. iii. 6.

They shall be on the head, &c.] Let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph (said Moses), and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren. De. xxxiii. 16. His enemies will I clothe with

shame, but upon himself shall his crown flourish. Ps. cxxxii. 18.

Was separate, &c.] There passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver, and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Ge. xxxvii. 28. Nu. vi. 2, 3. &c. He (the Lord) sent a man before them (Israel), even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron until the time that his word came: the word of the Lord tried him. The king sent and loosed him, even the ruler of the people, and let him go free; he made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his substance: to bind his princes at his pleasure, and teach his senators wisdom. Ps. cv. 17–22. I have spread out my hands all the day to a rebellious people, which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me, for I am holier than thou: these are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.
