and rebuked thee yesternight. And Laban answered and said 43 unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born? Now therefore 44 come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. And Jacob took a stone, and 45 set it up for a pillar. And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather 46 stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap. And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha: but 47

And David went out to meet "them" (the "children of Benjamin and Judah," who came to his hold at Ziklag), and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it. 1 Ch. xii. 17. I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy, for thou hast considered my trouble, thou hast known my soul in adversity. Ps. xxxi. 7. Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation; but said, The Lord rebuke thee. Jude 9.

44 Let us make a covenant.] See chap. xv. 18; xxi. 22, 23. and com. And "thou" ("Darid") shalt not only while yet I live shew me (Jonathan) the kindness of the Lord, that I die not: But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth. So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies. And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul. 1 Sa. xx. 14, 15, 16, 17.

Witness between me and thee.] And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day: this heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, &c. Ge. xxxi. 48. 52. And he (Abraham) said to (Abimelech), For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well. Ge. xxi. 30. and com. Now, therefore, write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed (saith the Lord of Israel). De. xxxi. 19. 21. Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it

may be there for a witness against thee. De. xxxi. 26. Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice, but that may be a witness between "us" ("the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half tribe of Manasseh"), and "you" ("the heads of the thousands of Israel"), and our generations after us; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord. Jos. xxii. 27. So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the Lord which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God. Jos. xxiv. 25. 27.

45 A stone, &c.] And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. And this stone which I have set for a pillar (said Jacob) shall be God's house. Ge. xxviii. 18. 22.

46 Brethren.] See verses 23. 32. 37. 54.

Gather stones.] And Joshua said unto "them" ("the twelve men," whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man), Pass over (Jordan) before the ark of the Lord your God, into the midst of Jordan, and take you up, every man of you, a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel. Jos. iv. 5. And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there unto this day. And those twelve stones which they took out of Jordan did Joshua pitch in Gilgal; that all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever. Jos. iv. 9. 20. 24. And they raised over him (Achan, who had trespassed, and was stoned) a great heap of stones unto this day. Jos. vii. 26. And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him. 2 Sa. xviii. 17. A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together. Ec. iii. 5.

An heap.] See Jos. iv. 5. preced. com.

48 Jacob called it Galeed. And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it 49 called Galeed; And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between 50 me and thee, when we are absent one from another. If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and 51 thee. And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold

And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt-offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings. And Samuel called the people together unto the Lord to Mizpeh. 1 Sam. x. 8. 17. But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord, but rebel against the commandment of the Lord, then shall the hand of the Lord be against you, as it was against your fathers. 1 Sa. xii. 15. And some of the Hebrews went over Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead: as for Saul, he was yet in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. 1 Sa. xiii. 7. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal. 1 Sa. xv. 33. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan. And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. 2 Ki. ii. 1.

47 Galeed.] Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. He. xii. 1.

48 This heap.] And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us, for it hath heard all the words of the Lord, which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God. Jos. xxiv. 27. Galeed.] See verse 23. From Aroer, which

Jos. xiii. 8, 9.

49 Mizpah.] The children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpeh. Ju. x. 17. And Jephthah uttered all his words before the Lord in Mizpeh. Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon. And early in 55 the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters,

Mal. iii. 5. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness. 1 Th. ii. 5.
