Steven Paul Marcus was born in the Bronx, New York on December 13, 1928. He graduated from high school at the age of 15 and won a tuition-free scholarship to Columbia University. He received a bachelor's degree in English literature, a master's degree, and a PhD from there. He became an associate professor at Columbia in 1963, a full professor of English in 1967, and the George Delacorte professor in the humanities in 1976. He became a professor emeritus in 2004. He wrote literary criticism. His books included Dickens: From Pickwick to Dombey, The Other Victorians: A Study of Sexuality and Pornography in Mid-19th Century England, Representations: Essays on Literature and Society, Freud and the Culture of Psychoanalysis: Studies in the Transition from Victorian Humanism to Modernity and Doing Good: The Limits of Benevolence written with Willard Gaylin, Ira Glasser and David Rothman. He died from cardiac arrest on April 25, 2018 at the age of 89.
