ART thou weary, art thou languid,

Art thou sore distressed?

'Come to Me,' saith One, 'and coming, Be at rest,'

2 Hath He marks to lead me to Him, If He be my guide?

In His feet and hands are wound-prints, And His side.'

3 Is there diadem, as monarch,

That His brow adorns? 'Yea, a crown, in very surety, But of thorns.'

4 If I find Him, if I follow, What His guerdon here?

By His own hand He leadeth me; His faithful foll'wer I would be, For by His hand He leadeth me.

Precious is the blood that heal'd us, Perfect is the grace that sealed us; Strong the hand stretch'd out to shield us; All must

The Lord my Shepherd is; I shall be well supplied: Since He is mine and I am His, What can I want beside?

THE Lord my Shepherd is;

I shall be well supplied:

Since He is mine and I am His,
What can I want beside?

2 He leads me to the place

Where heavenly pasture grows; Where living waters gently pass, And full salvation flows.

3 If e'er I go astray,

He doth my soul reclaim;

And guides me, in His own right way, For His most holy name.

4 While He affords His aid,

I cannot yield to fear;

Tho' I should walk thro' death's dark shad
My Shepherd's with me there.

5 In spite of all my foes,
Thou dost my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy exalts my head.

6 The bounties of Thy love

Shall crown my following days; Nor from Thy house will I remove, Nor cease to speak Thy praise.

For Thou art with me, and Thy rod And staff me comfort still.

4 My table Thou hast furnished In presence of my foes;

My head Thou dost with oil anoint, And my cup overflows.

5 Goodness and mercy, all my life, Shall surely follow me;

3 Yea, though I walk in death's dark vaie, And in God's house for evermore

Yet will I fear none ill;

My dwelling-place shall be.

There is a safe and secret place Beneath the wings divine, Reserved for all the heirs of grace: O be that refuge mine!

[blocks in formation]

Soothe me with holy hymn and psalm,
And bid my spirit rest.

2 Calm me, my God, and keep me calm;
Let Thine outstretchéd wing

Be like the shade of Elim's palm,

Beside her desert spring.

3 Yes, keep me calm, though loud and rude, The sounds my ear that greet; Calm in the closet's solitude,

Calm in the bustling street;

4 Calm in the hour of buoyant health,
Calm in my hour of pain;

Calm in my poverty or wealth,
Calm in my loss or gain;

5 Calm in the sufferance of wrong,
Like Him who bore my shame,

Calm 'mid the threatening, taunting throng Who hate Thy holy name.

OPPRESSED with noon-day's scorching heat, To yonder cross I flee;

Beneath its shelter take my seat:

No shade like this for me!

2 Beneath that cross clear waters burst-
A fountain sparkling free;
And there I quench my desert thirst;
No spring like this for me!

3 A stranger here, I pitch my tent
Beneath this spreading tree;
Here shall my pilgrim life be spent:
No home like this for me!

4 For burdened ones a resting-place, Beside that cross I see;

I here cast off my weariness:
No rest like this for me!
