4 O may my

soul on thee repose,

And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
Sleep that shall me more vigorous make,
To serve my God when I awake.

5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply:
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,

No powers of darkness me molest.

6 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

"I will lay me down in peace."

Ps. iv. 8.

1 SUN of my soul, thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if thou be near;
Oh may no earth-born cloud arise,
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.
2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast.

3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without thee I dare not die.
4 If some poor wandering child of thine
Have spurn'd to-day the voice divine,
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;
Let him no more lie down in sin.

[L.M.

5 Watch by the sick, enrich the poor
With blessings from thy boundless store;
Be every mourner's sleep to-night,
Like infant's slumbers, pure and light.

6 Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take;
Till in the ocean of thy love

We lose ourselves in heaven above a.

"At even they brought unto him all that were
diseased."-MARK i. 32.

1 AT even, ere the sun was set,

The sick, O Lord, around thee lay;
O in what divers pains they met !
O with what joy they went away!
2 Once more 'tis eventide, and we,

Oppress'd with various ills, draw near:
What if thy form we cannot see?

We know and feel that thou art here.
3 O Saviour Christ, our woes dispel ;

For some are sick, and some are sad,
And some have never loved thee well,
And some have lost the love they had;
4 And some have found the world is vain,

[L.M.

Yet from the world they break not free; And some have friends who give them pain, Yet have not sought a friend in thee.

;

5 And none, O Lord, have perfect rest,
For none are wholly free from sin
And they who fain would serve thee best,
Are conscious most of wrong within.
6 O Saviour Christ, thou too art man;

Thou hast been troubled, tempted, tried;
Thy kind but searching glance can scan
The very wounds that shame would hide.
7 Thy touch has still its ancient power;
No word from thee can fruitless fall;
Hear in this solemn evening hour,
And in thy mercy heal us all .

"Let the lifting up of my hands be an evening
sacrifice. "-Ps. cxli. 2.

1 THE sun is sinking fast,
The daylight dies;
Let love awake, and pay
Her evening sacrifice.

2 As Christ upon the cross
His head inclined,

And to his Father's hands
His parting soul resign'd;

3 So now herself my soul
Would wholly give
Into his sacred charge,

In whom all spirits live;

4 So now beneath his eye
Would calmly rest,
Without a wish or thought
Abiding in the breast;

5 Save that his will be done,
Whate'er betide;

Dead to herself, and dead
In him to all beside.

6 Thus would I live; yet now
Not I, but he
In all his power and love
Henceforth alive in me.

7 One Sacred Trinity,

One Lord Divine,

May I be ever his,

And he for ever mine. Amen.

"I meditate on thee in the night watches."

Ps. lxiii. 6.

THE day, O Lord, is spent ;
Abide with us, and rest;

Our heart's desires are fully bent
On making thee our guest.

We have not reach'd that land,
That happy land as yet,

Where holy angels round thee stand,

Whose sun can never set.

All thanks, O Lord, to thee:

I pray thee that offenceless

The hours of dark may be.

O Jesu, keep me in thy sight,

And save me through the coming night.

The joys of day are over:

I lift my heart to thee;
And call on thee, that sinless
The hours of gloom may be.

O Jesu, make their darkness light,

And save me through the coming night.

The toils of day are over:

I raise the hymn to thee;
And ask that free from peril
The hours of fear may be.

O Jesu, keep me in thy sight,

And guard me through the coming night ".

"He that keepeth thee will not slumber."

Ps. cxxi. 3.

1 SAVIOUR, breathe an evening blessing,
Ere repose our spirits seal;

Sin and want we come confessing,

Thou canst save, and thou canst heal.

2 Though the night be dark and dreary,
Darkness cannot hide from thee;
Thou art He, who, never weary,
Watchest where thy people be.

3 Though destruction walk around us,
Though the arrow past us fly,
Angel-guards from thee surround us,
We are safe, if thou art nigh.

4 Should swift death this night o'ertake us,
And our couch become our tomb,

May the morn in heaven awake us,
Clad in light and deathless bloom m

1 SWEET Saviour, bless us ere we go;
Thy word into our minds instil,

And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.

[SIX 88.

Through life's long day and death's dark night,
O gentle Jesu, be our light.
