"A light to lighten the Gentiles." [DOUBLE 88. 7s.
LUKE ii. 32.

1 HAIL! thou source of every blessing,
Sovereign Father of mankind,
Gentiles now, thy grace possessing,
In thy courts admission find.
Grateful now we fall before thee,
In thy church obtain a place;
Now by faith behold thy glory,
Praise thy truth, adore thy grace.

2 Once far off, but now invited,

[ocr errors]

We approach thy sacred throne;
In thy covenant united,

Reconciled, redeem'd, made one.
Now reveal'd to eastern sages,
See the star of mercy shine!
Mystery hid in former ages,
Mystery great of love divine.

3 Hail! thou all-inviting Saviour;
Gentiles now their offerings bring;
In thy temples seek thy favour,
Jesus Christ, our Lord and King.
May we, body, soul, and spirit,
Live devoted to thy praise,
Glorious realms of bliss inherit,
Grateful anthems ever raise".

"The Desire of all nations shall come."
HAG. ii. 7.

[8s. 7s.

1 COME, thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in thee.

2 Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.
3 Born thy people to deliver;
Born a child and yet a king;
Born to reign in us for ever;
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.
4 By thine own eternal Spirit,
Rule in all our hearts alone:
By thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne m.

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the
feet of him that bringeth good tidings."-

ISA. lii. 7.

How beauteous are their feet,

Who stand on Zion's hill,

Who bring salvation on their tongues,

And words of peace reveal!

How charming is their voice,

How sweet the tidings are!

Zion, behold thy Saviour King;
He reigns and triumphs here.

How happy are our ears,
That hear this joyful sound,

Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought, but never found!

How blessed are our eyes,

5

That see this heavenly light!

Prophets and kings desired it long,
But died without the sight.

The watchmen join their voice,
And tuneful notes employ;
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs,
And deserts learn the joy.

6

The Lord makes bare his arm

Through all the earth abroad:

Let every nation now behold
Their Saviour and their Gode.

"God be merciful unto us, that thy way may be
known upon earth.”—Ps. lxvii. 1, 2.

[blocks in formation]

And cause the brightness of thy face

On all thy saints to shine:

2

That so thy wondrous way

May through the world be known;

While distant lands their tribute pay,

And thy salvation own.

3

Let differing nations join

To celebrate thy fame;

Let all the world, O Lord, combine

[blocks in formation]

For thou, the righteous Judge and King,
Shalt govern all the earth e.

"Awake, awake; put on strength, O arm of
the Lord."-ISA. li. 9.

1 ARM of the Lord, awake, awake,

Put on thy strength, the nations shake;
And let the world adoring see

Triumphs of mercy wrought by thee.
2 Say to the heathen from thy throne,
I am Jehovah, God alone:

Thy voice their idols shall confound, And cast their altars to the ground. 3 Let Zion's time of favour come;

;

O bring the tribes of Israel home
And let our wondering eyes behold.
Gentiles and Jews in Jesus' fold.

4 Almighty God, thy grace proclaim
In every clime, of every name;
Let adverse powers before thee fall,
And crown the Saviour Lord of all a.

"Let us go up to the mountain of the Lord."

[C.M.

ISA. ii. 3.

1 BEHOLD the mountain of the Lord
In latter days shall rise
On mountain tops above the hills,
And draw the wondering eyes.

2 To this the joyful nations round,
All tribes and tongues shall flow;
Up to the hill of God, they'll say,
And to his house we'll go.

3 The beam that shines from Zion's hill
Shall lighten every land;

The King who reigns in Salem's towers
Shall all the world command.

4 No strife shall vex Messiah's reign,
Or mar the peaceful years;

To ploughshares men shall beat their swords,
To pruning-hooks their spears.

5 No longer hosts encountering hosts
Their millions slain deplore:
They hang the trumpet in the hall,
And study war no more.

6 Come then, O come, from every
To worship at his shrine;
And walking in the light of God,
With holy beauties shine".

"The Lord shall be King over all the earth."
ZECH. xiv. 9.

1 ZION'S King shall reign victorious;
All the earth shall own his sway;
He will make his kingdom glorious;
He will reign through endless day.

2 Nations, now from God estrangèd,
Then shall see a glorious light;
Night to day shall then be changed.
Heaven shall triumph in the sight.

3 Then shall Israel, long dispersed,

Mourning seek the Lord their God,
Look on him whom once they piercèd,
Own and kiss the chastening rod.

4 Mighty King, thine arm revealing,
Now thy glorious cause maintain ;
Bring the nations help and healing,
Make them subject to thy reign".
