PREFACE

My object in writing this book is to endeavour to teach boys who have mastered the elementary rules to write Latin Prose without cramming them with rules and examples. My main idea has been to insist on a careful comparison of the English with the Latin, and to let the pupil learn by steady practice, drawing his attention to the fact that the only way to learn to write good Latin is by trying to appreciate the Latin authors he is reading.

With this end in view I have given some hints on the difference between English and Latin in idiom and in style. There are in addition some notes on the commoner difficulties, with a table of differences of idiom.

I have also insisted strongly on the careful use of the analysis, which will teach English as well as Latin.

The pieces for translation are mainly selected from MSS. sources-school and college exercises. I have to thank Mr Arthur Sidgwick for his kindness in revising the Introduction, and for many most valuable suggestions. I am also indebted to several of my old colleagues at Rugby for some of the materials of the Exercises.

GEORGE L. BENNETT.
