3 Sunny days are past and gone:
So the years go, speeding fast,
Onward ever, each new one,
Swifter speeding than the last.

4 Life is waning; life is brief;
Death, like winter, standeth nigh:
Each one, like the falling leaf,
Soon shall fade, and fall, and die.

5 But the sleeping earth shall wake,
And the flowers shall burst in bloom,
And all Nature rising break
Glorious from its wintry tomb.

6 So, Lord, after slumber blest
Comes a bright awakening,
And our flesh in hope shall rest
Of a never-fading Spring.

"He shall be holy unto thee."—Lev. xxi. 8.

APTAIN of our salvation, take
The souls that here are trained for
Thee,

And fit for Thy great service make
These heirs of immortality;

And let them in Thine image rise,
And then transplant to Paradise.

2 Unspotted from the world and pure,
Preserve them for Thy glorious cause,
Accustomed daily to endure

The welcome burden of Thy cross:
Inured to toil and patient pain,
Till all Thy perfect mind they gain.
3 Train up Thy hardy soldiers, Lord.
In all their Captain's steps to tread;
Then send them to proclaim Thy word,
Thy Gospel through the world to spread;
Freely as they receive to give,

And preach the Death by which we live

In Time of Mar.

"He maketh wars to cease."--Ps. xlvi. 9.

OD the all terrible! King who ordainest,

304 G GOD

Great winds Thy clarions, the lightnings
Thy sword;

Show forth Thy pity on high where Thou reignest:

Give to us peace in our time, O Lord. 2 God the Omnipotent! Mighty Avenger, Watching invisible, judging unheard; Doom us not now in the hour of our danger: Give to us peace in our time, O Lord. 3 God the all-merciful! earth hath forsaken Thy ways of blessedness, slighted Thy word; Bid not Thy wrath in its terrors awaken: Give to us peace in our time, O Lord.

4 So shall Thy children in thankful devotion, Laud Him who saved them from peril abhorred,

Singing in chorus from ocean to ocean, "Peace to the nations, and praise to the Lord."

6.6.4.

save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen.

Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,

God save the Queen.

2 O Lord our God arise,
Scatter her enemies,

And make them fall.

Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
Ou Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.

3 Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour,
Long may she reign.

May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause

To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen.

WITH the sweet word of peace

We bid our brethren go;

Peace as a river to increase,

[ocr errors]

And ceaseless flow.

With the calm word of prayer
We earnestly commend

Our brethren to Thy watchful care,
Eternal Friend!

With the dear word of love
We give our brief farewell;
Our love below, and thine above
With them shall dwell.

With the strong word of faith
We stay ourselves on Thee;
That Thou, O Lord, in life and death
Their help shalt be.

5 Then the bright word of hope
Shall on our parting gleam,
And tell of joys beyond the scope
Of earthborn dream.

Farewell! in hope, and love,
In faith, and peace, and prayer;
Till He whose home is ours above

[FRANCES R. HAVERGAL,

307ORD, speak to me, that I may speak,

In living echoes of Thy tone:
As Thou hast sought, so let me seek
Thy erring children, lost and lone.
20 lead me, Lord, that I may lead
The wandering and the wavering feet;
O feed me, Lord, that I may feed
Thy hungering ones with manna sweet.
30 strengthen me, that while I stand
Firm on the Rock and strong in Thee,
I may stretch out a loving hand
To wrestlers with the troubled sea.
4 O teach me, Lord, that I may teach
The precious things Thou dost impart;
And wing my words, that they may reach
The hidden depths of many a heart.

5 O give Thine own sweet rest to me,
That I may speak with soothing power
A word in season, as from Thee,
To weary ones, in needful hour.

6 O fill me with Thy fulness, Lord,
Until my very heart o'erflow

In kindling thought and glowing word,
Thy love to tell, Thy praise to show.

7 O use me, Lord, use even me

Just as Thou wilt, and when, and where;
Until Thy blessed face I see,

Thy rest, Thy joy, Thy glory share.
