3 Far, far away, like bells at evening pealing, The voice of Jesus sounds o'er land and sea, And laden souls by thousands meekly stealing, Kind Shepherd, turn their weary steps to Thee.

Angels of Jesus, angels of light,

Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night. 4 Rest comes at length, though life be long and dreary,

The day must dawn, and darksome night be past;

Faith's journey ends in welcome to the weary, And heaven, the heart's true home, will come at last.

Angels of Jesus, angels of light,

Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night. 5 Angels, sing on! your faithful watches keeping; Sing us sweet fragments of the songs above; Till morning's joy shall end the night of weeping, And life's long shadows break in cloudless Angels of Jesus, angels of light, [love. Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night

Morning and Evening.

'My voice shalt Thou hear in the morning."-Ps. v. 3.

8.4.7.

[VON CANITZ.

289 COME, my soul, thou must be waking,

Now breaking

O'er the earth another day:

Come to Him who made this splendour;
See thou render

All thy feeble strength can pay.

2 Gladly hail the sun returning; Ready burning

Be the incense of thy powers: For the night is safely ended, God hath tended

With His care thy helpless hours.

3 Pray that He may prosper ever Each endeavour,

When thine aim is good and true; But that He may ever thwart thee, And convert thee,

When thou evil wouldst pursue.

4 Think that He thy ways beholdeth,
He unfoldeth

Every fault that lurks within;
He the hidden shame glossed over
Can discover,

And discern each deed of sin.

5 Mayest thou on life's last morrow, Free from sorrow,

Pass away in slumber sweet;
And, released from death's dark sadness,
Rise in gladness

That far brighter Sun to greet.

6 Our God's bounteous gifts abuse not,
Light refuse not,

But His Spirit's voice obey;
Thou with Him shalt dwell, beholding.
Light unfolding

All things in unclouded day.

[blocks in formation]

Be to the Eternal One:
To the Father, Son, and Spirit,
Laud and merit,

While unending ages run.

Amen.

Let the lifting up of my hands be as the evening sacrifice.”

Horeb, 386.]

Ps. cxli. 2.

64.66. [LATIN, tr. by E. CASWALL

HE sun is sinking fast ;
The daylight dies;

Let love awake, and pay
Her evening sacrifice.

2 As Christ upon the Cross
In death reclined,

Into His Father's hands

His parting soul resigned;

3 So now herself my soul
Would wholly give

Into His sacred charge,

In whom all spirits live;

4 So now beneath His eye
Would calmly rest,

Without a wish or thought
Abiding in the breast;-

5 Save that His will be done,
Whate'er betide;

Dead to herself, and dead
In Him to all beside.

6 Thus would I live; yet now
Not I, but He,

In all His power and love
Henceforth alive in me.

7 One sacred Trinity!

One Lord divine!

Myself for ever His,

And He for ever mine!

Norland, 228.]

291 THE day, O Lord, is spent,

2

Abide with us, and rest;

Our hearts' desires are fully bent
On making Thee our guest.

We have not reached that land,
That happy land as yet,

Where holy angels round Thee stand,

Whose sun can never set.

[blocks in formation]

O Sun of Righteousness, do Thou

Shine on us evermore!

2 Jesu, grant the weary
Calm and sweet repose;
With Thy tenderest blessing
May our eyelids close.
3 Grant to little children
Visions bright of Thee;
Guard the sailors tossing
On the angry sea.
4 Comfort every sufferer,
Watching late in pain;
Those who plan some evil,

From their sins restrain.

5 Through the long night-watches
May Thine angels spread
Their white wings above me,
Standing round my bed.

6 When the morning wakens,
Then may I arise

Pure, and fresh, and sinless
In Thy holy eyes.

7 Glory to the Father,
Glory to the Son,

And to Thee, blest Spirit,

Whilst all ages run.

"Thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.”—Ps. iv. 8.

[J. M. NEALE

All thanks, O Lord, to Thee :

I pray Thee now that sinless

The hours of dark may be!

O Jesus, keep me in Thy sight,

And guard me through the coming night.
