Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining, Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,

Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all!

Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom, and offerings divine,
Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gifts would his favour secure : Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

AFTER THE EPIPHANY.

21.

P. M.

PRAISE, my soul, the King of heaven ;
To his feet thy tribute bring;
Ransom'd, heal'd, restored, forgiven,
Who like thee his praise should sing?
Praise Him! Praise Him!

Praise the everlasting King!

Praise Him for his grace and favour
To our fathers in distress;
Praise Him still the same for ever,
Slow to chide, and swift to bless ;
Praise Him! Praise Him!

Glorious in his faithfulness!

Angels, help us to adore Him,

Ye behold Him face to face;

Sun and moon, bow down before Him,
Dwellers all in time and space

Praise Him! Praise Him!
Praise with us the God of grace

!

22.

GLORY be to God on high,

God, whose glory fills the sky;
Peace on earth, and man forgiven,
Man, the well-beloved of Heaven.

Hail, by all thy works adored!
Hail, the everlasting Lord!
All thy glories we confess,
Infinite and numberless.

Holy Spirit, Thee we own;

Thee, O Christ, the only Son!
Lamb of God for sinners slain,
Saviour of offending men.

P. M.

Praise the name of God Most High ;
Praise Him, all below the sky;
Praise Him, all ye heav'nly host,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

[blocks in formation]

PRAISE the Lord! ye heavens, adore Him,
Praise Him, angels, in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before Him,
Praise Him, all ye stars and light.
Praise the Lord! for He hath spoken,
Worlds his mighty voice obey'd;
Laws which never shall be broken
For their guidance hath He made.

Praise the Lord! for He is glorious;
Never shall his promise fail :
God hath made his saints victorious,
Sin and death shall not prevail.

Praise the God of our salvation;

Hosts on high, his power proclaim; Heaven and earth and all creation Laud and magnify his Name.

24.

GIVE to our God immortal praise;
Mercy and truth are all his ways:
Wonders of grace to God belong;
Repeat his mercies in your song.

L. M.

He built the earth, He spread the sky,
And fix'd the starry lights on high :
Wonders of grace to God belong;
Repeat his mercies in your song.

He sent his Son with power to save
From guilt, and darkness, and the grave:
Wonders of
grace to God belong;

Repeat his mercies in your song.

Through this vain world He guides our feet,

And leads us to his heavenly seat:

Wonders of grace to God belong ;
Repeat his mercies in your song.

[blocks in formation]

O LORD! turn not thy face away
From him that lies prostrate,
Lamenting sore his sinful life,
Before thy mercy gate;

Which Thou dost open wide to those
That do lament their sin :
O shut it not against me, Lord,
But let me enter in.

Call me not to a strict account
How I have lived here,
For then I know right well, O Lord,
Most vile I shall appear.

So come I to the throne of grace,
Where mercy doth abound,
Desiring mercy for my sin,

To heal my deadly wound.

Mercy, good Lord, mercy I ask,
This is the total sum;
For mercy, Lord, is all my suit,
O let thy mercy come!

[blocks in formation]

FATHER, again in JESUS' name we meet,
And bow in penitence beneath thy feet;
Again to Thee our feeble voices raise,
To sue for mercy, and to sing thy praise.

Alas! unworthy of thy boundless love,
Too oft with careless feet from Thee we rove;
But now, encouraged by thy voice, we come,
Returning sinners, to a Father's home.

O, by His name in whom all fulness dwells,
O, by His love which every love excels,
O, by His blood so freely shed for sin,
Open blest Mercy's gate, and take us in!

27.

MINE eyes and my desire
Are ever to the Lord ;
I love to plead his promises,
And rest upon his word.

When shall the sovereign grace

Of my forgiving God

S. M.

Restore me from those dangerous ways
My wandering feet have trod ?

O keep my soul from death,
Nor put my hope to shame;
For I have placed my only trust
In my Redeemer's name.

With humble faith I wait
To see thy face again;
Of Israel it shall ne'er be said,
He sought the Lord in vain.
