Year ending September 30th, 1923. FOREST POLICY. GENERAL. As regard afforestation no important modifications have been made during the year and the interim policy adopted by the Cabinet of the day after the report of the Committee on National Expenditure has been continued. For the present therefore the Commissioners' planting programme is maintained at 10,000 acres of conifers per annum. FINANCE. There remained in the Forestry Fund at the 30th September, 1922, the sum of £189,865, of which £95,983 represented the unexpended balance of £250,000 provided for relief works and £93,882 the carry over from normal operations. The Parliamentary Votes to the Forestry Fund during the year amounted to £153,000, transfers from the Vote for Relief of Unemployment to £100,000 and receipts from operations to £40,736, making, with the unexpended balance on 30th September, 1922, a total of £483,601. Of the latter sum £271,615 was expended and £211,986 carried over to the next forest year. By Treasury direction expenditure on the Commissioners' estates on relief of unemployment is now amalgamated with normal expenditure, due allowance being made in the Commercial Accounts for the increased cost of unemployment relief work. 66 LAND ACQUISITION.-The acquisition of land has gone forward steadily during the year, the total area amounting to 38,186 acres of which 28,589 acres were classified as plantable" and 9,597 acres as other," i.e., as too good or too poor to be used Acquisition of Plantable Land. |
