INTRODUCTORY NOTE. The present is the Eighteenth issue of the Abstract of Labour Statistics. In years before the War the Abstract was published at approximately annual intervals, but this is the first issue to appear since 1915, publication having been suspended during the War and subsequently on grounds of economy. During the long period which has elapsed since the issue of the Seventeenth Abstract the necessity of a publication bringing together in one volume a summary of the principal statistics relating to labour has become increasingly apparent, and the present edition has accordingly been prepared. The Statistics are presented in 14 main sections dealing respectively with population; employment, unemployment and unemployment insurance; wages and hours of labour; profitsharing and labour co-partnership; wholesale and retail prices and cost of living; strikes and lock-outs; industrial accidents and diseases and workmen's compensation; trade unions, federations, trades councils and employers' associations; co-operative societies, friendly societies and building societies; national health insurance; old age pensions; poor-law relief; migration; and building plans approved. The figures summarised are largely compiled by the Ministry of Labour, but summaries are also given of statistics relating to labour published by other Government departments. In the case of the serial Tables, the figures relate, as far as possible, to the years 1910-25. The form and scope of some of the Tables differ from those of the corresponding Tables in previous Abstracts, owing to changes in the statistics on which the Tables are based. Some statistics have been entirely discontinued and some new Tables have been added. Ministry of Labour, Statistics Division, INTRODUCTORY NOTE : PAGE AND UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE.
