The figures for 1921 relate to the working period of the year. As a result of the general stoppage of work, almost all the coal mines were idle for about three months, the estimated total number of coal winding days lost on account of disputes during the year amounting to 74 days per pit.

†This figure includes particulars for Ireland.

Including time lost through other causes not specified, e.g., pit meetings, weather, etc. The remaining time not accounted for in the Table (averaging about one-quarter-day per week) consists of ordinary stop or idle days, including the Saturday afternoon shift. It is not necessarily implied that all the persons employed worked every day the mines were open.

to January, 1926, see pages 38 and 39.]

AVERAGE WEEKLY NUMBER OF DAYS PER 4 WEEKS* ON WHICH COAL WAS WOUND IN GREAT BRITAIN† IN THE YEARS 1921-25.

[Compiled from the Annual Reports of the Secretary for Mines, supplemented by information specially supplied.]

[blocks in formation]

In the case of the periods marked the figures are averages for five weeks. †The statistics for 1921 relate to the United Kingdom.

The working time lost during the period ended 2nd April 1921 included 14 days on account of the national stoppage, and the period ended 30th July, 1921, was similarly affected to the extent of one-third of a day. Excluding the weeks so affected the average number of days on which coal was wound was 4.41 per week in the earlier period and 5.57 per week in the latter period.

† From November, 1920, the statistics are based on returns collected by the Mines Department, and relate to all the mines in Great Britain. Previous to that date the returns were collected by the Ministry of Labour, and covered between one-half and two-thirds of the workpeople in the industry in the United Kingdom.

One small mine in Northern Ireland is also covered by the returns. The figures show the number of days (allowance being made in all the calculations for short time) on which iron was got from those mines and open works with regard to which returns were received. It is not necessarily implied that all the persons worked every day the mines were open. Mines not working are omitted in computing the average number of days worked. † Affected by general Coal Mining stoppage. Mines closed owing to general Coal Mining stoppage. § Average for 11 months. • Including iron puddling and rolling, and steel making and rolling.

The figures relate to the number of shifts during which the works were in operation, taken in conjunction with the numbers of men employed. No account is taken of the time lost by individuals owing to absenteeism, etc., and it is not intended to imply that the number of shifts shown were actually worked by all the men employed.

The returns received cover the mills in South Wales, Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire, and a few mills in North Wales and Staffordshire.
