Then set thy bells a-ringing;
And set thy children singing
To Him glad lays of hearty praise
Who crowns with goodness all thy days:
O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain,
And echoes waft it on again

To praise Great Britain's God!

And praise Him for glad autumn-time and her abounding spoil,
The produce of the orchard and the vineyard and the soil;
And for the garnered sheaves of corn from out the harvest field,
And for all other precious things earth, air, and ocean yield.

And praise Him for the winter bleak with lovely garb of snow,
And for the cheery fireside nook where the ruddy embers glow;
For winds and storms and hoar frost forms upon the window glass,
For hailstone pearls and diamond dew upon the emerald grass.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;

And set thy children singing

To Him glad lays of hearty praise

Who crowns with goodness all thy days:

O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain,
And echoes waft it on again

To praise Great Britain's God!

And when to Him, the Lord of all, your praises ye address,
Forget not to give earnest thanks for Caxton's printing-press;
And that unfetter'd it extends alike to rich and poor,

Instructing the most cultured mind and the least lettered boor.

And for the vapour-power that moves you fast from place to place,
And for the lightning captive led, annihilating space;
And for each shrewd invention born of deep reflecting mind,
And for each new discovery made to benefit mankind.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;
And set thy children singing

To Him glad lays of hearty praise
Who crowns with goodness all thy days:
O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain,
And echoes waft it on again

To praise Great Britain's God!

And praise thy God, O happy land! for all thy righteous laws,
And for every onward movement and for every noble cause;
That thy tough and sinewy children still maintain their rights secure,
And for every effort they put forth to make their statesmen pure.

frown;

And praise thy God from age to age, for sceptre and for crown,
While monarchs ruling in His name need fear no angry
For reigning not in tyranny, but courtesy and grace,
They find in e'en the humblest heart a loyal dwelling-place.

A NATIONAL ANTHEM.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;
And set thy children singing

To Him glad lays of hearty praise
Who crowns with blessings all thy days:
O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain,
And echoes waft it on again

To praise Great Britain's God!

And while a priestly tyranny holds other men in chains,

Thy people shout for joy to feel free blood course through their veins; And with glad hearts they call to mind the ways their fathers trod To make them free in limb and life, and free to worship God;

And that in town or hamlet wheresoever they may roam,
Within the humble meeting-house or 'neath cathedral dome,
God's ministers are earnest found the Bread of Life to take,
And bid benighted, starving men to come and freely take.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;

And set thy children singing

To Him glad lays of hearty praise

Who crowns with blessings all thy days:

O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain,
And echoes waft it on again

To praise Great Britain's God!

And chiefly that in their own tongue by all His Word is read,

That Word that is the bond that links Christ's people to their Head; And which as seed most precious now through all the world they've flung To men of every clime and skin, and kindred, creed, and tongue.

Thy ships on every ocean float, thy commerce fills the world,
And nowhere is the land or sea without thy flag unfurled :
And whether in the frozen north or in the torrid zone

Thy name and greatness men respect, and thy dominion own.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;

And set thy children singing

To Him glad lays of hearty praise

Who crowns with blessing all thy days:

O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain,
And echoes waft it on again

To praise Great Britain's God!

In lands less favoured pestilence pursues its dreaded way,
Strewing its slaughtered thousands with thousands yet to slay;
While famine, gaunt marauder, elsewhere stalks forth abroad,
Making perhaps more victims e'en than pestilence or sword;

Thy sons and daughters undisturbed by rumours and alarms,
Seldom bewail their loved ones lost by famine, plague, or arms;
And from their everyday concerns not often called to cease,
Pursue in quiet undisturbed the industries of peace.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;
And set thy children singing
To Him glad lays of grateful praise
Who crowns with goodness all thy days:
O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain
And echoes waft it on again,

To praise Great Britain's God!

While kings and potentates abroad upraise their jubilant cry,
And sing Te Deums lustily, to God who dwells on high,

That they have fought the victors' fight with gun and sword and shield
And vanquished and destroyed their foes upon the battle-field-

Ye Britons too, upraise your voice and shout with main and might
That ye have no ghastly battle-fields, and ye have no foes to smite:

That ye live in harmony at home from war and conflict free,
While all around your peaceful shores rolls on the deep blue sea.

Then set thy bells a-ringing;

And set thy children singing

To Him glad lays of grateful praise

Who crowns with goodness all thy days:
O'er hill and plain loud swell the strain
And echoes waft it on again,

To praise Great Britain's God.

Rejoice then, O ye Britons blest, and shout aloud for joy,
And loyal to your God and Queen your heartiest notes employ ;
Praise Him for all His kindnesses so marvellous and vast,
Whether to come, or now possessed, or had in ages past.

And firstly praise your God as men of boldness, pluck, and worth:
Praise next as patriots, loving much the country of your birth:
Above all, praise as Christians then, rejoicing in His grace,

That Britain as a Christian land, still holds a foremost place.

Praise Him, ye sons and daughters, ye husbands and ye wives!

And while ye praise Him by your songs, O praise Him by your
Praise Him by holy living each at his appointed post,
Praise God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost!

CREATION'S ARTKEM.

"Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein; then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice Before the Lord; for He cometh, for He cometh to judge the earth: He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with His truth" PSALM XCVI., 11-13.

EJOICE, O Heavens! before the Lord, ye angel choirs, rejoice!
Be glad, O Earth! and shout for joy and lift on high your voice!
Before the LORD JEHOVAH who comes in might to reign-

Ten thousand saints attendant and following in His train!

Rejoice, O Heavens! before the LORD,
And praise, O Earth! the All-adored
Of men of all opinions:

He comes with might His foes to smite,
And turn earth's darkest shades to light,
And Satan's legions put to flight,
And on the left hand and the right

To claim His broad dominions.

No more despised by mortals, or buffeted or scourged:

No more by cross accursed down-borne, to Calvary's mountain urged;
But with Archangel's trumpet sound and Heaven's own pomp and glory-
Creation's monarch many-crowned, but not with thorn-crown gory!

Rejoice, O Heavens! before the LORD,
And praise, O Earth! the All-adored
Of men of all opinions :

He comes with might His foes to smite,
And turn earth's darkest shades to light,
And Satan's legions put to flight,
And on the left hand and the right
To claim His broad dominions.

Ye thunders peal your loudest before the LORD JEHOVAH !

Fall down, ye kings, the proudest, whom the King of kings rules over!
Ye lightnings beam your brightest on this stupendous day!

Ye snow-flakes, gleam your whitest to pave the Royal way

Rejoice, O Heavens! before the LORD,
And praise, O Earth! the All-adored
Of men of all opinions :

He comes with might His foes to smite,
And turn earth's darkest shades to light,
And Satan's legions put to flight,

And on the left hand and the right
To claim His broad dominions.

[graphic]

Ye oceans roar, your hymns outpour, as ceaselessly ye roll!

And every land His praise expand from north to southern pole !
Ye hurricanes and tempests fierce blow loud your trumpet blast!
Ye hidden fires earth's surface pierce for glaring torches vast!

Rejoice, O Heavens! before the LORD,
And praise, O Earth! the All-adored
Of men of all opinions :

He comes with might His foes to smite,
And turn earth's darkest shades to light,
And Satan's legions put to flight,

And on the left hand and the right
To claim His broad dominions.

Sing, ye blithe birds, your sweetest to ring JEHOVAH's praise!
Wing, ye lithe birds, your fleetest, to bring JEHOVAH'S lays!
Each tiny throat expand each note more clear than silver bell!
Echoes awake! your silence break, and loud the chorus swell!

Rejoice, O Heavens! before the LORD,
And praise, O Earth! the All-adored
Of men of all opinions:

He comes with might His foes to smite,
And turn earth's darkest shades to light,
And Satan's legions put to flight,

And on the left hand and the right
To claim His broad dominions.

Each floral chalice softly breathe each delicate perfume!

Bring forth, O Earth! each thing of worth that hideth in thy gloom :

Golconda, yield thy diamonds, Peru thy silver ore!

Australia and San Francisco, your golden trophies pour!

Rejoice, O Heavens! before the LORD,
And praise, O Earth! the All-adored
Of men of all opinions:

He comes with might His foes to smite,
And turn earth's darkest shades to light,
And Satan's legions put to flight,
And on the left hand and the right

To claim His broad dominions.
