Tune, Clarendon.

PRAYER MEETING TUNE BOOK, PAGE 26.

C. M.

"The entrance of thy words giveth light: it giveth understanding unto the simple." Ps. cxix. 130.

ALMIGHTY GOD! thy word is cast

Like seed into the ground;

Now let the dew of heaven descend,
And righteous fruits abound.

2 Let not the foe of Christ and man
This holy seed remove;
But give it root in every heart,
To bring forth fruits of love.

3 Let not the world's deceitful cares
The rising plant destroy;
But let it yield a hundred fold,
The fruits of peace and joy.

4 Oft as the precious seed is sown,
Thy quickening grace bestow,
That all whose souls the truth receive,
Its saving power may know.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

Ps. cxix. 105.

ATHER of mercies, in thy word,

FATH

What endless glory shines!

Forever be thy name adored

For these celestial lines.

2 Here the Redeemer's welcome voice Spreads heavenly peace around, And life, and everlasting joys

Attend the blissful sound.

3 O, may these heavenly pages be
My ever dear delight;

And still new beauties may I see
And still increasing light!

4 Divine Instructor, gracious Lord,
Be thou forever near,

85

Teach me to love thy sacred word,
And view my Saviour there.

"My times are in thy hand." Ps. xxxi. 15.

MY times are in thy hand;
M My God, I wish them there;

My life, my friends, my soul I leave
Entirely to thy care.

2 My times are in thy hand,
Whatever they may be;
Pleasing or painful, dark or bright,
As best may seem to thee.

3 My times are in thy hand:
Why should I doubt or fear?
My Father's hand will never cause
His child a needless tear.

4 My times are in thy hand,

Jesus, my Advocate;

S. M.

Nor shall thy hand be stretched in vain,

For me to supplicate.

5 My times are in thy hand;

I'll always trust in thee;

And after death, at thy right hand
I shall forever be.

"Not what I will, but what thou wilt." MARK xiv. 36.

FATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss

[ocr errors]

Thy sovereign will denies,
Accepted at thy throne of grace,
Let this petition rise:-

2 "Give me a calm, a thankful heart,
From every murmur free;
The blessings of thy grace impart,
And make me live to thee.

3 "Let the sweet hope that I am thine,
My life and death attend;

Thy presence through my journey shine,
And crown my journey's end."

"The Lord is the portion of my inheritance." Ps. xvi. 5.

WHAT sinners value I resign;

WHAT

Lord, 'tis enough that thou art mine;

I shall behold thy blissful face,

And stand complete in righteousness.

2 This life's a dream, an empty show;
But the bright world to which I go
Hath joys substantial and sincere;
When shall I wake and find me there?

3 O glorious hour! O blest abode!

I shall be near and like my God!
And flesh and sin no more control
The sacred pleasures of the soul.

"I will run the way of thy commandments." Ps. cxix. 32.

IN all my Lord's appointed ways,
My journey I'll pursue;

Hinder me not, ye much loved saints,
For I must go with you.

2 Through floods and flames, if Jesus leads,
I'll follow where he goes;
Hinder me not, shall be my cry,
Though earth and hell oppose.

3 Through duty and through trials too,
I'll go at his command:

Hinder me not, for I am bound

[blocks in formation]

4 And when my Saviour calls me home,
Still this my cry shall be,

Hinder me not, come, welcome, death,
I'll gladly go with thee.

"Being justified freely by his grace." ROMANS iii. 24.

AMAZING grace! how sweet the sound,

saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found,

Was blind, but now I see.

2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved:

How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed.

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares
I have already come:

Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

4 And when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the vail.
A life of joy and peace.

"So run that ye may obtain." 1 Cor. ix. 24.

L. M.

AWAKE, our souls; away our fears;
Let every trembling thought be gone;

Awake, and run the heavenly race,
And put a cheerful courage on.

2 True, 'tis a strait and thorny road,
And mortal spirits tire and faint;
But they forgot the mighty God,
Who feeds the strength of every saint.
3 From thee, the overflowing Spring,
Our souls shall drink a full supply;
While those who trust their native strength
Shall melt away, and droop, and die.

4 Swift as an eagle cuts the air,

We'll mount aloft to thine abode; On wings of love our souls shall fly, Nor tire amid the heavenly road.

"I press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." PHIL. iii. 14.

AWAKE, my soul, stretch every nerve,

And press with vigour on:

A heavenly race demands thy zeal,
And an immortal crown.
