To My Mother:

WHOSE LOYAL AND LOVING AID MADE MORE EFFECTIVE THE LIFE-WORK

OF MY FATHER,

I DEDICATE THIS BOOK.

The study of history is but the study of mankind.

"No past event," says Macaulay, "has any intrinsic importance. The knowledge of it is valuable only as it leads us to form just calculations with respect to the future." Only, therefore, as we bring the events of former ages out into the clearer light of our every-day trials and triumphs, only as we regard them side by side with the exberiences which are real to us, can the records of the past be of any value to the worker of the present. In the belief that an eternal correlation does exist between dead actions and living endeavors, the writer of this biographical sketch has prefaced each of the chapters with an Historical Prelude depicting some scene in the world's history in which there may perhaps be discovered a certain relation to the efforts and actions of the man whose lifework is here imperfectly recorded.
