POPULAR SCHOOL BOOKS, PUBLISHED BY CRADOCK AND Co.,

(LATE BALDWIN AND CRADOCK)

48, PATERNOSTER ROW, LONDON,

HORATIUS RESTITUTUS; or the Books of Horace, arranged in Chronological order, according to the Scheme of DR. BENTLEY, from the Text of GESNER. Corrected and Improved, with a Preliminary Dissertation, very much enlarged, on the Chronology of the Works, on the Localities, and on the Life and Character of the Poet.

By JAMES TATE, M.A., Late Master of Richmond Grammar School, and Canon Residentiary of St. Paul's. Second edition, with considerable Improvements, price 12s., 8vo. Cloth. To this Edition is added an Original Treatise on the Metres of Horace.

"We doubt whether we could produce, in modern times, a second instance of such ardent and exclusive devotion to a favourite author as that of Mr. Tate to Horace. This edition of Horace is a work, both in its design and execution, worthy of very high praise. Seriously speaking, the Horatius Restitutus should find a place in the Library of the mature Scholar, of the youthful Student, and of the accomplished Man of the World, who still cherishes his classical tastes, and takes delight in that admirable union of shrewd common sense, and graceful ease, in him whom Shaftesbury has happily called the most gentleman-like of Roman Poets.-Quarterly Review, Oct. 1838.

A HEBREW GRAMMAR in the English Language. By the Rev. JOSEPH SAMUEL C. F. FREY, Editor of Vanderhooght's Hebrew Bible; Author of a Hebrew, Latin, and English Dictionary; Judah and Israel, &c. The Tenth Edition, carefully revised, and greatly enlarged by the addition of Reading Lessons, Rules and Analyses, from Genesis and the Book of Psalms, by the Author. In demy 8vo., handsomely printed and stereotyped by Whittingham, price 8s. 6d., bound in cloth extra.

*** From the office of Hebrew Teacher, which the Author sustained amongst his own nation, and since extensively amongst Christians, he has had opportunities of trying and altering the Rules of this Grammar, as long as the students met with any difficulty; and he hopes he has now succeeded in opening the way to obtain the knowledge of this most ancient and sacred language in less time, and with far less difficulty and perplexity, than any other language, ancient and modern. This Grammar is divided into distinct chapters, and each chapter is followed by Exercises according to the preceding rules, that theory and practice may go hand in hand.

P. VIRGILII MARONIS ENEIS in usum studiosæ Juventutis, accurate recensuit J. EDWARDS, AM., Coll. S. S. Trin., Cantab., Collegii Regal. Londin., Hypodidascalus. In foolscap 8vo., price 3s. 6d. bound.

With this edition of the Æneid great pains have been taken to render it as accurate a text-book as possible. The books are divided into paragraphs indicated by Roman numerals, which have reference to a companion, nearly ready for publication under the title of Quæstiones Virgilianæ, a work suitable for learners, and the questions of which may be answered by the ordinary books of reference in the hands of all young scholars.

GERMAN GRAMMAR.

I. ARTICLES.

1. THE two articles (definite and indefinite) are declined in four cases, as follows:

II.-NOUNS.

1. NOUNS SUBSTANTIVE.

The nouns Substantive, according to their gender, are accompanied either by the masculine, or feminine, or neuter article. But the gender of substantives is in the German language quite arbitrary, and follows not any positive rule. It is therefore necessary to learn the gender by individual experience, and the best method for this purpose is this: that the Student in learning any new substantive, impresses upon his memory the article belonging to it; this becomes the more necessary since several substantives being used in two different genders, adopt two different significations, which can not be discerned but by the respective article.

The nouns substantive are declinable, and though it would be impossible to array them in declensions, like those of the Latin or Greek languages, a few rules may still be established to refer substantives to their proper mode of inflection or declension. They are as follow:

a. All nouns substantive of the feminine gender remain unaltered in the Singular number throughout all the cases; in the Plural number they adopt, throughout all the cases, the letter n, if the singular end in e, el, er but if it end in any vowel but e, or in any consonant but el, or er,they adopt en. Monosyllables ending with a consonant, form their Plural by adding the letter e, and changing their vowel into the corresponding diphthong.

b. Substantives masculine and neuter ending in e el, er or em, are declined in genitive singular by adding the
