PREFACE

THE War has greatly quickened the interest in the question of the world into which we pass at death. In the following pages, which treat of the dream of immortality and its fulfilment, I have tried to keep in mind the reader who has no time for the larger and more learned discussions of this vast subject. Modern knowledge and investigation have been taken into account, and I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to many writers, whose help I may occasionally have utilized to a greater extent than I know.

The purpose of the little book is practical; hence the numerous illustrations. It is not a volume of sermons, though it contains echoes of sermons; as it stands, it has never been preached. It does not, of course, claim to be, in any sense, an adequate consideration of 'the last things,' and must not be judged by its omissions. I believe both in the resurrection of the dead and the intermediate state, but only hints are given here of these great themes.

I am deeply grateful to my friend and brotherin-law, the Rev. Leonard L. Price, B.D., for reading and revising the proof-sheets.
