Ως πρέπει μορφὴ μὲν ἀνδρὸς, βλέμμα δ' εὐειδὲς ῥέθους

One touch to her hand, and one word in her ear,

When they reach'd the hall-door, and the charger stood near;

So light to the croupe the fair lady he swung,
So light to the saddle before her he sprung!

"She is won! we are gone, over bank, bush, and

Scaur :

They'll have fleet steeds that follow," quoth young Lochinvar.

BISHOP BRUNO.

BISHOP Bruno awoke in the dead midnight,
And he heard his heart beat loud with affright;
He dreamt he had rung the palace bell
And the sound it gave was his passing knell.

Bishop Bruno smiled at his fears so vain,

He turn'd to sleep and he dreamt again :

He rang at the palace gate once more,

And Death was the porter that open'd the door.

He started up at the fearful dream,

And he heard at his window the screech-owl scream!

Bishop Bruno slept no more that night;

Oh! glad was he when he saw the daylight.

Now he goes forth in proud array,
For he with the Emperor dines to-day;
There was not a Baron in Germany,
That went with a nobler train than he.

LATIN ELEGIACS.

"Destrictus ensis cui super impia

Cervice pendet, non Siculæ dapes

Dulcem elaborabunt saporem."— -HORACE.

EXCUTITUR somno media de nocte sacerdos

Brunius, et nimio corda timore micant :

Scilicet in somnis visus pulsare palati
Ostia, funereos audiit inde modos.

Ipse sibi adridens terrorem ponit inanem,
Mox iterum somni rumpitur alma quies;
Ostia (sic visus) rursum pulsarat, et ipsa
Janitor incedit mors, reseratque fores.

Territus exsiluit visis: infausta fenestram
Præteriens raucos strix dabat ore sonos !
Non iterum posthac trepidos sopor occupat artus;
Lætitiam o quantam lux rediviva dedit !

Et jam cum pompa proficiscitur ille superba,
Namque erit in regis cœna hodierna domo :
Tunc proceres nullos mittit Germania tellus
Deductos comitum nobiliore manu.
