Memorandum respecting the Examinations of Candidates who may be nominated to compete for the Situation of Assistant in the British Museum, Bloomsbury.

[Principal Librarian's Office, and Departments of Printed Books, Manuscripts, Prints and Drawings, Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities, Greek and Roman Antiquities, British and Medieval Antiquities, and Coins and Medals.]

3. Elementary Mathematics, viz. :-Arithmetic, including Vulgar and Decimal Fractions, with either Euclid, Books I. and II., or Algebra, including Simple Equations.

4. English Composition.

5. Précis.

6. Geography.

7. English History, from the Conquest to the end of the Eighteenth Century.

8. One ancient and one modern Language.

9. Any other Subject or Subjects which the Trustees may prescribe for the particular Department in which the vacancy has occurred.

NOTES. (1.) All Candidates must pass to the satisfaction of the Civil Service Commissioners in all the foregoing subjects, but the Competition will be in Subjects 8 and 9. Under these heads, the Greek, Latin, French and German languages have been most frequently prescribed, but the following have also on some occasions been prescribed: Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Hebrew, Syriac, Egyptian (Ancient), Coptic, Arabic, Sanskrit, and (for the Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities) Classical Archeology.

(2.) Examinations for Assistantships in the British Museum do not take place at fixed intervals, but are held from time to time as Candidates are nominated to compete on the actual occurrence of vacancies. The Civil Service Commissioners can give no information as to the persons from whom, or the means by which nominations are to be obtained.

Memorandum respecting the Examination of Candidates nominated to compete for the Situation of Assistant in the Natural History Museum, South Kensington.

[Zoology, Botany, Geology, and Mineralogy Departments.]

Limits of Age.-18 and 30.

Fee for Examination.- £4. Subjects for Examination:1. Writing from Dictation.

2. Orthography.

3. Arithmetic, including Vulgar and Decimal Fractions.
4. English Composition.

5. Geography, including the elements of Physiography.

6. Translation from Latin and from French or German.

7. Any other Subject or Subjects which the Trustees may prescribe bearing upon the work of the particular Department in which the vacancy has occurred.

NOTES. (1.) All Candidates must pass to the satisfaction of the Civil Service Commissioners in all the subjects; but in the competition, marks will be assigned only in Subject 7. Under this head the Examinations are both practical and by papers. For the Department of Zoology, a general knowledge has been required of the Structure and Classification of the Animal Kingdom, and a more particular knowledge of some special group according to the requirements of the appointment to be filled up. The Examination for the Botanical Department has included the Physiology, Morphology, and Classification of Plants. For the Department of Geology, the subjects have been Animal Morphology and Classification, Palæontology, and Stratigraphical and Physical Geology. For the Department of Mineralogy, Advanced Mathematics, Optics, Crystallography, and Inorganic Chemistry have been required.

(2.) * In these subjects there will be an Oral Examination, the time and place of which will be notified to the Candidates who select them.

+ The test in Latin, Greek, French, and German will include translation from English into those languages.

If from any cause it should be found impossible to adhere to the precise times set down in this table, care will be taken that the Caudidates are allowed the full time for each paper.

N.B.-Candidates failing to attend punctually will forfeit their right to be examined.

Notices.*

1. Candidates must, before proceeding to the Examination Rooms, leave, in a room provided for the purpose, their hats, overcoats, umbrellas, and any books or papers which they may have brought with them.

2. Candidates are not allowed to bring rulers into the Examination Room. When necessary, round rulers will be provided by the Commissioners.

3. No Candidate may quit the Examination Room until the expiration of half an hour from the time fixed for the commencement of the paper on which he is engaged.

4. No Candidate who has left the Examination Room during the hours assigned to paper work may return to the paper which he has quitted, without special permission, obtained before he leaves the room. In such cases, the Commissioners will decide whether marks can be allotted,

5. Perfect silence must be preserved in the Examination Room; and any Candidate guilty of disorderly or improper conduct in or about the Room will be liable to exclusion from the Examination.

6. Any Candidate detected in the Examination Room in the possession of a book, manuscript, or other article from which he might derive irregular assistance, or in copying from the papers of any other Candidate, or in permitting his own papers to be copied, or in giving or attempting to give, or in obtaining or attempting to obtain assistance of any discription, will be thereby disqualified, and will not be admitted to any subsequent Examination held under the directions of the Civil Service Commissioners.

7. Candidates are required to write their Names at the top of every book or separate sheet of paper which they send in.

8. Any Candidate who is dissatisfied with the pens, ink, or paper supplied to him is requested to apply to the Superintendent of the Examination Room; but those who prefer any particular kind of pen are recommended to bring it with them.
