APPENDIX, ARTICLES OF UNION, Propofed by the Right Reverend the BISHOPS of the SCOTCH EPISCOPAL CHURCH, to thofe Clergymen who officiate in Scotland by virtue of Ordination from an English or an Irish Bishop. As an union of all those who profefs to be of the Epifcopal perfuafion in Scotland, appears to be a measure extremely defirable, and calculated to promote the interests of true religion;-The Right Reverend the bifhops of the Scotch Epifcopal Church do invite and exhort all those clergymen in Scotland, who have received ordination from English or Irish bishops, and the people attending their miniftrations, to become paftors and members of that pure and primitive part of the Chriftian church, of which the bishops in Scotland are the regular governors :-With a view to the attainment of which defirable end, the faid bifhops propofe the following Articles of Union, as the conditions on which they are ready to receive the above-men tioned clergy into a holy and Christian fellowship, and to acknowledge them as paftors, and the people who shall be committed to their charge, and duly and regularly adhere to their ministrations, as members of the Scotch Epifcopal Church. I. Every fuch clergyman shall exhibit to the bishop of the diocefe or district, in which he is fettled, or in cafe of a vacancy, to the primus of the Epifcopal college, his letters of orders, or a duly attested copy thereof, that fo, their authenticity and validity being afcertained, they may be entered in the diocefan book or regifter kept for that purpose. II. Every fuch clergyman shall declare his hearty and unfeigned affent to the whole doctrine of the gospel, as revealed and fet forth in the holy fcriptures ;-And shall farther acknowledge, that the Scotch Epifcopal Church, of which the bishops in Scotland are the regular governors, is a pure and orthodox part of the univerfal Chriftian church. III. Every fuch clergyman fhall be at liberty to use, in his own congregation, the liturgy of the Church of England, as well in the administration of the facrament of the Lord's fupper, as in all the other offices of the church. IV. Every fuch clergyman, when collated to any paftoral charge, fhall promife, with God's affiftance, faithfully and confcientiously to perform the duties thereof, promoting and maintaining, according to his power, peace, quietnefs, and Chriftian charity, and studying in a particular manner to advance, by his example and doctrine, the spiritual welfare and comfort of that portion of the flock of Chrift, among which he is called to exercife his ministry.
