has been erected. It was not without emotion that I landed on this blood-stained soil, where probably greater iniquities were perpetrated than ever disgraced any other spot on earth. It was about eight o'clock in the evening, and, instead of the wild noise that greeted former visitors, one heard nearly from every house family prayers.-Dr. Seeman.

BOOKS.

Songs of Zion: consisting of One Hundred and Fifty Hymns,

with Music in the Sol-fa Notation: Edited by the Rev. J. H. Wilson, Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. T. Nelson and Sons. Square 32mo, 64 pages. Price, in single copies, Threehalf-pence; in dozens, One Penny.

Just before going to press, a new-born hymn-book has come to our hand, -too late for us to do more than merely notice its publication,-which we should regret to omit, even for a month. Our recent cheap hymn-books have been mostly designed for young people specially, or specially for grown-up persons and experienced Christians. The aim of the “Songs of Zion” is to present a collection which includes hymns suitable for all. In this respect, we believe it will be found to come nearer to the mark of a universal hymnbook than any that has appeared at a price within the reach of all. We have not yet fully gone over the whole; but, as the name of the excellent Editor led us to expect, we consider that great judgment and spiritual taste have been shown in the selection, --scarce a hymn omitted which it would have been desirable to insert. Of the music we are not competent to judge; but we have reason to believe that like care has been taken in that department.

In price, the little book is a marvel. One Hundred and Fifty Hymns and Tunes, got up with great neatness, paper and print of the best, for One Penny. It seems as if the force of cheapness could not further go. Joux Pounds, the Originator of Ragged Schools. Edinburgh:

James Taylor, George Street. 32mo, 16 pages. Price One Halfpenny. Those of our young readers who may wish to know more of John Pounds than the page and the picture in our present number have told them, will find some further account of his worth and his well-doing in this interesting halfpenny; book. Many lessons of diligence and love are to be learned from those simple “annals of the poor."

CHILDHOOD'S YEARS.

CHILDHOOD's years are passing o'er us,

Soon our school-days will be done : Cares and sorrows lie before us,

Hidden dangers, snares unknown. O may He who, meek and lowly,

Trod himself this vale of woe, Make us his, and make us holy,

Guard and guide us while we go. Hark ! it is the Saviour calling,

“Little children, follow me!” Jesus, keep our feet from falling,

Teach us all to follow thee.
Soon we part,-it may be, never-

Never here to meet again;
Oh, to meet in heaven for ever!

Oh, the crown of life to gain !
