Second Meeting with the people of Goodoor, as related by Venkataramiah and noted down by Mr Braidwood. WE all left the bungalow about five, and proceeded to the village. Two well dressed females, on seeing the foremost of us, fled to their houses. The people were all staring from the doors as we passed. We took up our former station under the shade of a large tamarind tree, which shielded us from the rays of the descending sun, and with a high mud wall at our back. The small idoĺ temple was in front, and near at hand another beautiful tamarind tree covered with fruit, reminding us of the power and goodness of God, and the natural blessings he has heaped on this country. We could be seen at a distance from along three streets. First a lame man came, with whom Venkataramiah entered into a lively conversation; soon thirty or forty persons gathered, five or six of them women, and increased to about a hundred. The people gradually came from their doors; every passing traveller stood still, and persons at a distance came eagerly forward. More of the women ventured into the |
