Collected Plays, Band 6,Ausgabe 1Methuen, 1970 - 147 Seiten "Brecht's famous parable, showing that in aggressive and unjust societies good can only survive by means of evil, was written in 1939-41, while Brecht was in flight from the Nazis in Scandinavia. In it, the gods come to earth in search of enough good people to justify their existence. They find Shen Teh, a good-hearted but penniless prostitute, and make her a gift with which she is able to set up her own business. But her goodness brings ruin and she has to disguise herself as a man in order to muster sufficient ruthlessness to survive. The play was first produced in Zurich in 1943, but it was not performed in Germany until 1952. This translation by John Willett includes Brecht's own notes and relevant texts as well as an extensive editorial commentary by John Willett and Ralph Manheim on the genesis of the play"--Back cover. |
