2 Guard us waking, guard us sleeping,
And when we die,

May we, in Thy mighty keeping,
All peaceful lie!

When the last dread call shall wake us,
Do not Thou, our God, forsake us,
But to reign in glory take us
With Thee on high. Amen.

14 "Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent."

1 ABIDE with me; fast falls the even-tide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see;

O Thou Who changest not, abide with me.

3 I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the Tempter's power?

Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide

with me.

4 I fear no foe with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still if Thou abide with me.

5 Hold Thou Thy Cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies;

15

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

"The Lord is my Light and my
Salvation."

1 O SAVIOUR, bless us ere we go;

Amen.

Thy word into our minds instil;
And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.
Through life's long day and death's dark
O gentle Jesus, be our Light. [night,

2 The day is gone, its hours have run,
And Thou hast taken count of all--
The scanty triumphs grace hath won,
The broken vow, the frequent fall.
Through life's long day and death's dark
O gentle Jesus, be our Light. [night,

3 [Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways
True absolution and release;

And bless us more than in past days
With purity and inward peace.

Through life's long day and death's dark
O gentle Jesus, be our Light.

[night,

4 Do more than pardon—give us joy,
Sweet fear, and sober liberty,
And simple hearts without alloy,
That only long to be like Thee.
Through life's long day and death's dark
O gentle Jesus, be our Light.]

[night,

› is sweet, for Thou hast toiled; care is light, for Thou hast cared;

16

A never let our works be soiled
With strife, or by deceit ensnared.
though life's long day and death's dark
gentle Jesus, be our Light.

For all we love, the poor,

the sad,

The sinful, unto Thee we call;

Olot Thy mercy make us glad:

[night,

Thou art our Saviour and our All.

Through life's long day and death's dark
gentle Jesus, be our Light.

[night, Amen.

"I am the Light of the world.”

1 0 CHRIST, Who art the Light and Day,
Thy beams chase night's dark shades away;
The very Light of Light Thou art,
Who dost that blessèd light impart.

2 All-Holy Lord, to Thee we bend,
Thy servants through this night defend,
And grant us calm repose in Thee,
A quiet night from perils free.

3 Let not dull sleep the soul oppress,
Nor secret foe the heart possess,
Nor Satan's wiles the flesh allure,
And make us in Thy sight impure.

4 Light slumber let our eyelids take,
rt to Thee be still awake;
ght hand protection be
o love and trust in Thee.

5 O Lord, our strong defence, be nigh; Bid all the powers of darkness fly; Preserve and watch o'er us for good, Whom Thou hast purchased with Thy blood. 6 Remember us, dear Lord, we pray, Whilst burdened in the flesh we stay; Thou only canst the soul defend;

17

Be with us, Saviour, to the end. Amen.

"The Lord is thy Keeper.'

1 THE day is past and over;

I

All thanks, O Lord, to Thee;
pray Thee that offenceless

The hours of dark may be;

O Jesu! keep me in Thy sight,

[ocr errors]

And save me through the coming night.

2 The toils of day are over:

I raise the hymn to Thee--
And ask that free from peril
The hours of fear may be.
O Jesu! keep me in Thy sight,
And guard me through the coming night.

3 Be Thou my soul's preserver,

O God! for Thou dost know

How many are the perils

Through which I have to go;
Lover of men! O hear my call,

And guard and save me from them all. Amen.

18 "The day is Thine; the night also is Thine."
1 ANOTHER day is past and gone,
O God, we bow to Thee;

Again, as nightly shades come on,
To Thy defence we flee.

19

2 Forgive us all the evil done,
The good undone, to-day;
And keep us from the Wicked One,
Now, Father, and for aye.

3 When shall that day of gladness come,
Ne'er sinking in the west;

That country and that blessed home,
Where none shall break our rest;

4 Where life shall be all love and peace,
And pleasure without end;

Where golden harps that never cease
With joyous hymns shall blend;

5 Where we, O God, preserved beneath
The shelter of Thy wing,

For evermore Thy praise shall breathe,
And of Thy mercy sing?

"At even they brought unto Him all
that were diseased."

1 Ar even, ere the sun was set,

The sick, O Lord, around Thee lay;
Oh, in what divers pains they met!
Oh, with what joy they went away!

2 Once more 'tis eventide, and we

Oppress'd with various ills draw near; What if Thy form we cannot see?

We know and feel that Thou art here.

3 O Saviour Christ, our woes dispel;

For some are sick, and some are sad, And some have never loved Thee well, And some have lost the love they had;
