Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Romans 3. 19, 20. 66 GOD made man upright?"* but he "being in honour," abode not long. And although Adam came out of the Almighty Former's hands a perfect creature, and all the faculties of his soul and body were one temple dedicated to God, and for God to dwell in; although his will, understanding, and affections, were a transcript of the Divine purity, yet he was mutable: for God himself, who can do all things, though it seems a paradox, cannot create an immutable creature-immutability being an essential attribute of Deity. Adam fell by foul rebellion against God, and by base ingratitude to his great Benefactor, into a state of sin and misery; and brought death into the world, and all our, woe:" death, spiritual, temporal, and eternal. The sentence, "In the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die," was instantly accomplished in him, if not fully, "in whom all have sinned."* Adam was perfectly happy in his state of innocence.
