Tue Author has endeavoured, in the following pages, to trace the steps by which the power of self-control may be practically developed in a young and ardent mind when brought under the influence of high and noble motives ; and further, to show how materially the happiness of the individual may be enlarged by turning it from the selfish indolence of pride to the active and habitual exercise of the faculties in the acquisition of useful and varied knowledge.
