THE HEIRESS IN HER MINORITY; OR, THE PROGRESS OF CHARACTER. BY THE AUTHOR OF 'BERTHA'S JOURNAL.' IN TWO VOLUMES.-VOL. I. LONDON: JOHN MURRAY, ALBEMARLE STREET. 1850. ADVERTISEMENT. THE Author has endeavoured, in the following pages, to trace the steps by which the power of self-control may be practically developed in a young and ardent mind when brought under the influence of high and noble motives; and further, to show how materially the happiness of the individual may be enlarged by turning it from the selfish indolence of pride to the active and habitual exercise of the faculties in the acquisition of useful and varied knowledge. The scene is laid in the West of Ireland, and a few slight sketches are given of its many interesting objects; but they were all written before that country had become a prey to the late dreadful evils of rebellion and famine; and the reader is assured that all the characters are purely imaginary.
