2 Though voice nor sound inform the ear, Well known the language of their song, When one by one the stars appear,

Led by the silent moon along, Till round the earth, from all the sky, Thy beauty beams on every eye.

3 While these transporting visions shine, Along the path of Providence, Glory eternal, joy divine,

Thy word reveals, transcending sense; My soul thy goodness longs to see, Thy love to man, thy love to me.

[blocks in formation]

FORTH from the dark and stormy sky,
Lord, to thine altar's shade we fly;
Forth from the world its hope and fear,
Father, we seek thy shelter here;
Weary and weak thy grace we pray;
Turn not, O Lord, thy guests away.

2 Long have we roamed in want and pain,
Long have we sought thy rest in vain;
Wildered in doubt, in darkness lost,
Long have our souls been tempest-tossed;
Low at thy feet our sins we lay;
Turn not, O Lord, thy guests away.

THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noonday walks he shall attend,
And all my midnight hours defend.
2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,
Or on the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales, and dewy meads,
My weary, wandering steps he leads;
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.

3 Though in the paths of death I tread,
With gloomy horrors overspread,
My steadfast heart shall fear no ill,
For thou, O Lord, art with me still;
Thy friendly rod shall give me aid,
And guide me throughthe dreadful shade.
4 Though in a bare and rugged way,
Through devious, lonely wilds I stray,
Thy presence shall my pains beguile:
The barren wilderness shall smile,
With sudden greens and herbage
crowned;

And streams shall murmur all around.

Ps. 74:16, 17.

MOORE.

THOU art, O God, the life and light Of all this wondrous world we see; Its glow by day, its smile by night, Are but reflections caught from thee; Where'er we turn, thy glories shine, And all things fair and bright are thine. 2 When day, with farewell beam, delays Among the opening clouds of even, And we can almost think we gaze Through opening vistas into heaven,Those hues that mark the sun's decline, So soft, so radiant, Lord, are thine. 3 When night, with wings of starry gloom, O'ershadows all the earth and skies, Like some dark, beauteous bird, whose plume

Is sparkling with unnumbered eyes,That sacred gloom, those fires divine, So grand, so countless, Lord, are thine. 4 When youthful spring around us breathes, Thy spirit warms her fragrant sigh; And every flower that summer wreathes Is born beneath thy kindling eye: Where'er we turn, thy glories shine, And all things fair and bright are thine.

BLEST hour! when mortal man retires
To hold communion with his God,
To send to heaven his warm desires,
And listen to the sacred word.

́2 Blest hour! when earthly cares resign
Their empire o'er his anxious breast,
While all around the calm divine
Proclaims the holy day of rest.
3 Blest hour! when God himself drawsnigh,

Well pleased his people's voice to hear, To hush the penitential sigh,

And wipe away the mourner's tear. 4 Blest hour! for where the Lord resortsForetastes of future bliss are given; And mortals find his earthly courts The house of God, the gate of Heaven!

SWEET the time, exceeding sweet!
When the saints together meet,
When the Saviour is the theme,
When they joy to sing of him.

2 Sing we then eternal love,

Such as did the Father move:
He beheld the world undone,
Loved the world, and gave his Son.

3 Sing the Son's amazing love;

How he left the realms above,
Took our nature and our place,
Lived and died to save our race.

4 Sing we, too, the Spirit's love;

With our stubborn hearts he strove,
Filled our minds with grief and fear,
Brought the precious Saviour near.

5 Sweet the place, exceeding sweet,
Where the saints in glory meet;
Where the Saviour's still the theme,
Where they see and sing of him.

Soon shall your trembling tongues be dumb,

Your lips forget to move.

4 Ye young, before his throne,
Come, bow; your voices raise;
Let not your hearts his praise disown
Who gives the power to praise.

AGAIN our earthly cares we leave,
And to thy courts repair;
Again with joyful feet we come,
To meet our Saviour here.

2 Great Shepherd of thy people, hear!
Thy presence now display;
We bow within thy house of prayer;
Oh! give us hearts to pray.

3 The clouds which vail thee from our sight,
In pity, Lord, remove;
Dispose our minds to hear aright
The message of thy love.

4 The feeling heart, the melting eye,
The humble mind, bestow;
And shine upon us from on high,
To make our graces grow.

5 Show us some token of thy love,
Our fainting hopes to raise ;
And pour thy blessing from above,
To aid our feeble praise.

[blocks in formation]

AGAIN the Lord of life and light
Awakes the kindling ray,
Dispels the darkness of the night,
And pours increasing day.

2 Oh, what a night was that which wrapt
A guilty world in gloom!
Oh, what a sun which broke this day
Triumphant from the tomb!

3 This day be grateful homage paid,
And loud hosannas sung;
Let gladness dwell in every heart,
And praise on every tongue.

4 Ten thousand thousand voices join
To hail this happy morn,
Which scatters blessings from its wings
On nations yet unborn.

THE festal morn, my God, is come,
That calls me to thy sacred dome,
Thy presence to adore!

My feet the summons shall attend,
With willing steps thy courts ascend,
And tread the hallowed floor.

2 Ev'n now, to my expecting eyes,
The heaven-built towers of Salem rise;
Ev'n now, with glad survey,

I view her mansions, that contain
The angelic forms-a glorious train-
And shine with cloudless day.

3 Hither, from earth's remotest end,
Lo! the redeemed of God ascend,
Their tribute hither bring;
Here, crowned with everlasting joy,
In hymns of praise their tongues employ,
And hail the immortal King.

THE bird let loose in Eastern skies,
Returning fondly home,

Ne'er stoops to earth her wing, nor flies
Where idle warblers roam.

2 But high she shoots, thro' air and light, Above all low delay,

Where nothing earthly bounds her flight,
Nor shadow dims her way.

3 So grant me, Lord, from every snare
Of sinful passion free,
Aloft, through faith's serener air,
To hold my course to thee.
4 No sin to cloud, no lure to stay
My soul, as home she springs,
Thy sunshine on her joyful way,
Thy freedom in her wings.

Gen. 28: 16.

J. WESLEY.

Lo, God is here!-let us adore!
And own how dreadful is this place!
Let all within us feel his power,

And, silent, bow before his face.

2 Lo, God is here! him day and night United choirs of angels sing:

To him, enthroned above all height,

Let saints their humble worship bring. 3 Lord God of hosts! oh, may our praise Thy courts with grateful incense fill! Still may we stand before thy face, Still hear and do thy sovereign will.

And this his festal day,

LYTE

When he accepts the humblest vows
That we sincerely pay.

The Sabbath to our sires

In mercy first was given;

The Church her Sabbath still requires

To speed her on to heaven.

4 And we, like them of old,
Are in the wilderness;

And God is now as near his fold
To pity and to bless.

5 Then let us open wide

Our hearts for him to fill;
And he that Israel then supplied,
Will keep his Israel still.

OLD HUNDRED. L. M.

Praise God, from whom all bless-ings flow! Praise him, all creatures here below!

YE nations round the earth, rejoice Before the Lord, your sovereign King; Serve him with cheerful heart and voice,

With all your tongues his glory sing.

WATTS.

His terrors keep the world in awe;
His justice guards his holy law;
Yet love reveals a smiling face,
And truth and promise seal the grace.

3 Through all his works his wisdom shines,
And baffles Satan's deep designs;
His power is sovereign to fulfill
The noblest counsels of his will.

4 And will this glorious Lord descend To be my Father and my Friend? Then let my songs with angels' join, Heaven is secure, if God be mine.

[blocks in formation]

ALL people that on earth do dwell, Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice; Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell, Come ye before him and rejoice. 2 The Lord, ye know, is God indeed, Without our aid he did us make; We are his flock, he doth us feed,

And for his sheep he doth us take.
3 Oh, enter, then, his gates with praise;
Approach with joy his courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless his name always,
For it is seemly so to do.

4 For why? the Lord our God is good,
His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
