APPENDIX XXI. MEMBERSHIP OF TRADE UNIONS IN GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND. NUMBER OF TRADE UNIONS AT THE END OF 1924, WITH MEMBERSHIP (MALE, FEMALE AND TOTAL) AT THE END OF 1923 AND AT THE END OF 1924. 19,530 13,772 33,302 17,877 12,720 30,597 Metal, Engineering and Shipbuilding : Iron, Steel, Tinplate, etc. Manufacture Engineering, Ironfounding, Shipbuilding and other Metal Working. Textile : Excluding carpenters and joiners for whom see under building. † Excluding unions of Government, bank, law, railway and shipping clerks, which are included in other groups. NOTE. The figures given for 1924 are provisional and subject to slight revision. Some unions are unable to state exactly the number of males and females, respectively, comprised within their total membership, and in these cases estimates have been furnished. The totals shown for males and for females, therefore, are orly approximate. For the purpose of the analysis by groups of unions, the total membership of each union has been included in the group with which the majority of the members are believed to be connected, a separate group being made for unions of general workers. The figures relate to all trade unions of employees - whether registered under the Trade Union Acts or not-which are known to include among their functions that of negotiating with employers with the object of regulating conditions of employment. They include members in oversea branches, and in branches in the Irish Free State, of unions whose headquarters are in Great Britain or Northern Ireland, but wholly exclude unions whose head offices are in the Irish Free State.
