HE Holy Scriptures, containing all
the Will of God, and the gracious but indispensable terms of Salvation, are our perfect rule of life, and ought doubtlefs to be the early and constant study of every Christian. This is the acknowledged doctrine of Protestants, and it is accordingly their unvaried, practice to put them into the hands of children as soon as they are sent to school; the New Testament being one of the first books in which they learn to read. But their attention is then commonly directed to nothing more than that they do not mistake the words; and when they can pronounce them right, and read a chapter with tolerable fluency, they seem to have done all that is required of
