Between My Father and the Old Fool: A Holocaust MemoirMesorah Publications, 2004 - 274 Seiten Memoirs of a Jew born in 1924 to a hasidic family in Lower Vishiva, which had been in Romania but was ceded by the Nazis to Hungary. After the Nazi occupation in 1944 Cahan and his father, stepmother, and six half-siblings were interned in the ghetto of Upper Vishiva. Cahan was soon inducted into a military labor service unit and sent to Germany, where he worked at Flossenbürg, Ohrdruf, and several other camps. Stresses efforts made by himself and some others to observe religious practices, even in such dire circumstances. Cahan was eventually sent on a death march to Buchenwald, where he was liberated. He returned to Romania after the war, and emigrated to Belgium in 1961. His father, stepmother, and two half-brothers, as well as his sister and young niece, perished in the Holocaust; his four half-sisters survived. In addition, the members of a family that had befriended him while he was at a labor camp in Hungary, Moshe and Bella Gaspar and their daughter, Lily, were shot for providing refugees in Budapest with false documents. |
