PREFACE.

THE title of this Book already explains the purpose for which it has been published. The Author feels convinced that its use will materially assist those persons who are desirous of obtaining a correct grammatical acquaintance with this Language; but it will be found of more especial service to those who wish to speak the Language in as short a time as possible. The Author likewise flatters himself that it will be found useful to those English Masters who may be engaged in giving lessons in French.

Conversational Exercises have been added to each rule, in order that the Pupil may be enabled to apply that which he has previously learned, which phrases may be extended or changed at the option of the Master.

Should this Publication obviate the general want of a book of this kind, the Author will consider himself more than amply repaid for his trouble.

All the other letters are consonants (consonnes), to which may be added k and w, only used in foreign names.

Sect. 2.-SIGNS AND ACCENTS.

There are in French three accents (accents), which serve to determine the pronunciation of certain vowels :

1. The acute accent (l'accent aigu), which slopes in the same direction as the writing ('); for instance, l'été, the summer.

* The pronunciation of q and u cannot be expressed by means of English letters, with sufficient accuracy; they must be learned with the assistance of the master.
