OPINIONS OF THE WORK.

A more important or interesting accession than this Library to our national literature has not taken place in modern times. No serious or well-arranged plan has been proposed, before this time, for placing the treasures of the classic writers in the hands of readers who were unacquainted with the original. All the intellectual splendors of Greece and Rome are opened to the contemplation of the gentler sex; and a lady can acknowlege an acquaintance with the treasures of ancient poetry without the smallest compromise of her delicacy.'-Monthly Review.

The efforts of this publisher in the cause of ancient literature are meeting with extensive encouragement, as well for his first project of introducing so long a list of Greek and Latin authors to the notice of the unlearned part of the community in a uniform series, as for the manner in which the promises of using every exertion to render his English Translations of the Classics universally acceptable, have been since redeemed.'-New Mo Magazine.

This is a most important work, perhaps the the long list which the public owe to the ene We should pity those families who hav with the volumes of the Classical Lib

DEMOSTHENES.

In the Translation of Demosthenes, Leland unites the man of taste with the man of learning, and shows himself to have possessed not only a competent knowlege of the Greek language, but that clearness in his own conceptions, and that animation in his feelings, which enabled him to catch the meaning, and to preserve the spirit, of the most perfect orator Athens ever produced.'-DR. PARR.

XENOPHON.-ANABASIS AND CYROPEDIA.

'Spelman's Anabasis is one of the most accurate and elegant Translations that any language has produced.'-GIBBON.

The soldier has always admired the talents of Xenophon in conducting, and the scholar in describing, the Retreat of the Ten Thousand;' and the philosopher and statesman have alike been delighted with his charming work denominated the Cyropadia.'-Robinson's Antiquities of Greece.

HERODOTUS.

It would confer but small honor on Mr. Beloe to say that his Translation is superior to any which has made its appearance in our language. It is written in easy, perspicuous, and elegant language.'-Encyclopædia Metropolitana.

VIRGIL.

Dryden's version of the Eneid is the most noble and spirited Translation I know in any language.'-POPE.

Virgil is no less admired as a virtuous, ingenious, and judicious author, than as an incomparable poet and excellent philosopher.'-MELMOTH.

Porson, Byron, &c. and by some of the most eminent Poets of the present day.

THUCYDIDES.

'Dr. Smith's Translation of Thucydides is a work of standard merit and excellence.'-Bibliographical Miscellany.

This great historian has been universally admired for the justness and dignity of his sentiments, the vigor of his style, the fidelity and accuracy of his details, and his judicious reflections on every plan proposed and every measure pursued. His speeches may be considered as the philosophical part of his History, since they develope the causes of events, together with the interests of all the states engaged in the Peloponnesian War.

PLUTARCH'S LIVES.

Menage says, if all the books in the world were in the fire, there is not one which he would so eagerly snatch from the flames as Plutarch. That author never tires him; he reads him often, and always finds new beauties.

'Langhornes' translation of Plutarch's Lives is both accurate and elegant; and deserves no mean share of the critic's praise, and the attention of the public.'-Bibliographical Miscellany.

One of the most admirable works which antiquity has bequeathed to us, we have here in the accurate and graceful translation of the Langhornes, embellished by heads of the various eminent men whom Plutarch has contributed to immortalise.'Monthly Review.

CICERO.

Duncan's Cicero is well known as an elegant translation of more than ordinary merit.'-Monthly Review.

[ocr errors]

Tully's Offices by Dr. Cockman is executed with a masterly hand, and expresses the sense of the original with fidelity and spirit.'-Bibliographical Dictionary.

In the translation of the two Treatises on Old Age and Friendship, Melmoth has presented us with one of the finest remains of classical antiquity in the most elegant form of the English language.'-Monthly Review.

LIVY.

'Baker's translation of Livy is executed with general fidelity and perspicuity.'-Bibliotheca Britannica.

This translation may be read as a novel, and referred to as history, by those to whom the name of Livy is unfamiliar.'Atlas.

The high rank which Livy holds among historical writers will never be disputed. He is always great; his style is clear and intelligible; labored without affectation, diffusive without tediousness, and argumentative without pedantry: in his harangues he is bold and animated, and in his narrations and descriptions clear and elegant.
