SIR: I transmit herewith a decennial report on assessed valuations and tax levies in all States and the District of Columbia, which was prepared in connection with the decennial investigation on wealth, public debt, and taxation authorized by the permanent census act. The reports for 1922 are issued under five titles as follows: (1) Estimated national wealth, (2) Public debt, (3) Assessed valuation and tax levies, (4) Taxes collected, and (5) Digest of State laws relating to taxation and revenue. The report was prepared under the direction of Starke M. Grogan, chief statistician in charge of wealth, public debt, and taxation, assisted by Lemuel A. Carruthers, expert chief of division.
