And because of this conviction it was not possible for Luther in good faith to give to Zwingli, who had another, indeed a dangerous, spirit, the hand of brotherly recognition. Luther's heart wanted to. But his loyalty to Christ and His Word forbade. Luther's refusal to condone or recognize error as he saw it was an act of true heroism. The Church today needs this lesson.

We should like to write much more. Every Leaguer ought to get and study a pamphlet entitled "The Marburg Colloquy,' by our venerable friend, Dr. Forsander, of Rock Island, Ill., 15 cents.

CHURCH NEWS

-Thiel College recently conferred the title of LL.D. upon Dr. F. H. Knubel, president of the United Lutheran Church. He will hereafter be addressed Rev. F. H. Knubel, D.D., LL.D.

-In St. Paul's Church, New York City, F. H. Bosch, pastor, on Sunday, June 22, services were held in recognition of the work of the parish deaconess, Sister Rosa Dittrich, who was set apart for the diaconate at the Mary J. Drexel Home and Philadelphia Motherhouse just twenty-five years ago.

PHILADELPHIA

The enlarged pulpit platform and new furniture recently installed in Bethel Church, Fifth street and Sedgley avenue, the Rev. D. E. Rupley, pastor, were dedicated on Whitsunday. The renovations cost about $1,000. The church is prosperous in every department and is one of the banner churches in benevolence. During the past year over 100 members were received. CHICAGO

Trinity Church, Chicago Heights, the Rev. J. Bannon Swope, pastor, went "over the top" in their effort to raise $10,000 to pay off the indebtedness on the church property.

MINNEAPOLIS

-Rev. J. A. O. Stub pastor of Central Lutheran Church, Minneapolis, received the degree of doctor of divinity from Wittenberg College.

After singing "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken," Mr. Harry Hodges addressed the convention.

The afternoon session closed by singing "Onward, Christian Soldiers," after which Rev. Hingkeldey pronounced the benediction.

The Rally Service was held at 7:30 o'clock. Mr. Otto Schubert and his choir did some wonderful work throughout the Rally Service. The devotional exercises were conducted by Rev. Keller, of New Haven. Rev. Paul Kirsch, of Meriden, and Rev. Carl B. Schuchard, of Brooklyn, were the speakers of the evening.

The convention closed by singing "Now Thank We All Our God."

CONVENTIONS

While another has said that the advantages of conventions are discussion-inspiration-education-co-operation-enthusiasm. Have those of us who have been delegates profited thus? Next year's reports will reveal the truth.

The mystic cords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of Liberty, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the angels of our better nature.-Abraham Lincoln.
