NORFOLK.

A fine specimen of the White Stork, (Ardea Ciconia of Linnæus,) was shot in this County on the 6th of May, and is now in the possession of Mr. J. Hunt, of Norwich. It measures 3 ft. 10 in. from the top of its beak to the end of its tail, and the expansion of its wings 7 ft. 4 in. It is so rare in this country, that Bewick concludes the history of this species in the following words: "Wallis, in his history of Northumberland, mentions one which was killed near Collerford Bridge, in the 1766. Its skin was nailed up against the wall of the Inn at that place, and drew crowds of people from the ad acent parts to view it.

names, a cross croslet fitche, and other devices, with the dates of 1570, 1637, 1639, 1640, &c. the latter of which appeared to be the most recent, and the whole apparently nade with the points of soldiers' weapons, the place having evidently been a guardroom ler the king's troops occupying the cut-works of the castle, till the unfortunate Charles erected his standard, which was done very near the spot. It may seem extraordinary that this discovery had not been inade sooner, as most of the entrenchments have, till of late, been kept open; but here, on the Parliament troops taking possession, was a lofty cross work thrown up for the defence of the great tower, commonly called King Richard's Tower, which completely buried it; and so it might have remained for ages, had not the tenants of the Duke of NewcasLe removed this mass of soil to raise the gardens which occupy the site of the old fish pond. There does not appear to have been any thing found in the excavation worthy of remark, except two or three pieces of

OXFORDSHIRE.

A Roman villa was lately discovered near Stonesfield, 11 miles from Oxford. It was first pointed out in 1816, By the Rev. Mr. Brown, the vicar of that parish. By the Assistance of that gentleman, and of the Duke of Marlborough, on whose estate the villa stands, extensive discoveries have been made. The bui ding encloses about three acres of land; the peristyle, on every side of the quadrangle, is very evident, as are the divisions of forty-seven rooms.-The pavements are tesselated, and in good condition. One of them in a large room is perfect. The lesseræ are so exactly laid together, so beautifully varied, and the pattern so correct and elegant, that the best floor-cloth is not painted with more accuracy or beauty. The pattern is one which frequently appears on our. modern floor-cloths.-The baths are completely excavated, and the hypocausts and flues, by which they warmed the rooms in the manner we have adopted for hot-houses, are apparent. The largest rooms seem to he about 30 by 35-one is exactly 28 by 24;
