Expository writing by these students is sometimes appalling, but in poetry they may create compelling images and metaphors, use language in both creative and precise ways, play with words and ideas, and express their thoughts freely.
What we want to do is create curricula and classroom practices that engage both thinking and feeling, reason and imagination, to accommodate various learning styles.
Creating art necessitates exploring the individual universe and allows the artist to express deeply significant ideas and emotions that are difficult both to understand and to express through "ordinary conversational language.
