St. Luke the Evangelist.

Luke, the beloved physician. Col. iv. 14.

1 mf O JESU, O Redeemer,

Physician of the soul,

Receive, receive Thy people,

And cleanse and make them whole.
For health, for strength, for healing,
The stream is never dry,

Whose fountain-head flows ceaseless
From holy Calvary.

2 PO Lamb of God, O Jesu,
Upon the altar slain,

mf

cres The Blood of Thine atonement
Shall purge our guilty stain:
Not now in type and figure
Of bull or heifer seen,

ƒ The Blood of the Redeemer
Shall sprinkle the unclean.

3 my The guests await the summons,
Their robes are white and fair,
cres Washed in the Blood of Jesus
From sin and from despair :
And He, the great All-healer,
His wine and oil shall pour
Upon their wounds, and bear them
From trouble evermore.

4 mf The banquet-hall is ready,
The banquet-hall of Christ:
He calls the loved physician,
The blest evangelist;

The marriage feast awaits him,
The joy of his reward:
Receive then, faithful servant,
The wages of thy Lord;-

5 Where, Father Ever Glorious,
And Everlasting Son,
And Spirit All-Victorious,
The Holy Three in One,
The God of our salvation,
The angel-hosts adore :
To Thee be adoration

From earth for evermore.

Amen.

Gerard Moultrie.

St. Simon and St. Jude, Apostles.

Just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of

saints. Rev. xv. 3.

1 mf THOU Who sentest Thine apostles
Two and two before Thy Face,
Partners in the night of toiling,
Heirs together of Thy grace,
Throned at length, their labours ended,
Each in his appointed place ;-

2 Praise to Thee for those Thy champions
Whom our hymns to-day proclaim;

mf One, whose zeal by Thee enlightened
Burned anew with nobler flame;
One, the kinsman of Thy childhood,
Brought at last to know Thy Name.

3 Praise to Thee! Thy fire within them
Spake in love, and wrought in power;
Seen in mighty signs and wonders
In Thy Church's morning hour;
mf Heard in tones of sternest warning
When the storms began to lour.

4 p Once again those storms are breaking;
Hearts are failing, love grows cold;
Faith is darkened, sin abounding;
Grievous wolves assail Thy fold;
cres Save us, Lord, our One Salvation;
Save the faith revealed of old.

5p Call the erring by Thy pity;

Warn the tempted by Thy fear; Keep us true to Thine allegiance, Counting life itself less dear, cres Standing firmer, holding faster, dim As we see the end draw near.

6 cres Till, with holy Jude and Simon

And the thousands faithful more,
We, the good confession witnessed,
And the lifelong conflict o'er,
On the sea of fire and crystal
Stand, and wonder, and adore.

7 God the Father, great and wondrous
In Thy works, to Thee be praise ;
King of saints, to Thee be glory,
Just and true in all Thy ways;
Praise to Thee, from Both proceeding,
Holy Ghost, through endless days.

Also the following:

Christ is gone up: yet ere He passed

I am glorified in them. John xvii. 10.

rest,

Who Thee by faith before the world confessed,

Thy Name, O Jesu, be for ever blest.

Hallelujah!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress, and their Might;

Thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought

fight;

Thou in the darkness drear their one true

Light.

Hallelujah!

3 For the apostles' glorious company, Who, bearing forth the Cross o'er land and

sea,

Shook all the mighty world,-we sing to

Thee,

Hallelujah!

4 mf For the evangelists,—by whose blest word, Like fourfold streams, the garden of the Lord

Is fair and fruitful,-) be Thy Name

adored.

Hallelujah!

* These Hymns may be sung at other times.

5 For martyrs,—who with rapture-kindled

eye

Saw the bright crown descending from the sky,

And, dying, grasped it,―Thee we glorify.

Hallelujah!

6 mf Oh! may Thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,

Fight as the saints who nobly fought of
old,

And win, with them, the victor's crown of
Hallelujah!

gold.

7 my Oh, blest communion! fellowship divine ! P We feebly struggle; () they in glory shine! mf Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine.

Hallelujah!

8 mf And when the strife is fierce, the warfare

long,

cres Steals on the ear the distant triumph-song, ƒ And hearts are brave again, and arms are

[blocks in formation]

9 m The golden evening brightens in the west; dim Soon, soon, to faithful warriors cometh

rest;

p Sweet is the calm of Paradise the blest.

Hallelujah!

10 cres But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious

day;

The saints triumphant rise in long

array;

The King of Glory passes on his way!

Hallelujah!
