THE NEW FIELD EXERCISE AND EVOLUTIONS.

We have before us the revised edition of the "Field Exercise and Evolutions of Infantry," bearing date the 1st September, 1870, and preceded by the usual intimation of Her Majesty's commands that the most scrupulous adherence be given to all instructions promulgated therein.

The work of revision appears to have been executed with much care and judgment, and we venture to say that the prescribed system of manœuvre contains in itself all the elements requisite for its adaptation to any order of tactical action, linear or perpendicular, which it may ultimately be deemed advisable to adopt, and this too without undue redundancy of details.

This numerical disproportion between our miniature regiments divided into eight or ten weak companies, and the ponderous battalions of continental nations, of Prussia more particularly, is so great, that any mere collation of the details of the drill books would probably lead to erroneous conclusions, besides occupying more space than we can here allot to it.

We must therefore content ourselves with indicating some of the most noticeable alterations and improvements in the little volume on our table as compared with former editions of the same work.

To begin at the beginning, in the matter of Recruit or Squad drill, we note that the position of the British soldier at "attention" has been changed for-what shall we say? the nth time-and in this instance undoubtedly for the better. The unsightly angle of sixty degrees between the feet, adopted we presume in deference to the opinions of certain anatomists who aver that the extremities of the human frame are more truly perpendicular to the earth at that angle than at any other, has been reduced again to forty-five degrees. The arms, too, are at last to be allowed to hang naturally, close to the sides, fingers and thumb close together and extended downwards, so as neither to wedge the elbows into the sides above the hips with the palms "full to the front," nor to stick them out with a display of knuckles after the fashion prescribed by former regulations, which, ere now, have furnished Friend Punch with many interesting "studies from the life," in the persons of stiff-jointed tyros in disciplinary difficulties. The good old soldierly phrase "to face" has disappeared, and all changes of individual position, whether at the halt or on the march, are designated by the more sonorous tion of the angle turned being named first. face" has become "right about turn," and "right half face" and U.
