PREFACE.

THE occasional publication by the four Examiners of their own Solutions of the Problems and Riders proposed to Candidates for Mathematical Honours has grown into a custom, and the reasons in favour of this practice have been so often stated, being in fact almost obvious, that it is not necessary to offer any remarks on the subject in regard to this volume. The only new feature which characterises the present collection of Solutions consists in the appendage of a brief table of marks. In this table are given the full marks assigned by the Examiners to the Book-Work, Problems, and Riders, in each of the two grand departments of the Examination, and also the mean marks gained by different groups of the Candidates. The object of the Examiners in publishing this abstract of the marks is to point out to the Undergraduates of the University the practical effect of the elementary and higher branches of mathematical study on the positions of the various classes of candidates in the Mathematical Tripos, and thereby to induce candidates of different grades
