An amiable temper and gentle manner are frequently found to succeed much more effectually than an assault, for in the latter case man becomes a timid animal, he has been known to start back with an aspect of affright and dismay, and finally to retreat, never to return.

Maria was not ambitious enough to aim at universal conquest, nor did she ever seek to display her power over a lover by invit ing the attention of others, and so endeavouring to produce in his distracted breast pangs of jealousy or despair. Colonel Lindsay declared that her unaffected piety, strict adherence to truth, and indifference to general admiration, had first drawn his

regards towards her;-said that a severe illness with which Mrs. Beresford was for some time confined had afforded him an opportunity of observing her tender and affectionate solicitude and cares for a sick friend, and assured Mrs. Vernon that it was those domestic graces, together with Maria's cheerful equanimity of temper and taste for elegant and useful employment, which had decided him in the opinion, that if happiness were to be found in the marriage state it. must be with such a companion.

To the heart of a mother conscious that

she has, to the best of her ability, educated her children in the love and fear of their Creator-that she has taught them to remember him in the days of their youth, it is a proud moment when a daughter is addressed by a man of worth and integrity as the selected partner of his future life. Such

a gratification was now for Mrs. Vernon, who hastened to seek and felicitate Maria on the favorable aspect of her destiny.

A more happy circle was never assembled than on this day at the parsonage. Colonel Lindsay, throwing off the restraint which had been imposed upon him, was now, consistently with the promise of his guarantee, considered and treated as one of the family; and the evening was passed in projecting various pleasurable excursions and frequent meetings. Once did a tear tremble in the eye of Maria, as she whispered to Caroline had my dear Henry only lived to share our satisfaction;' but her sister reminding that his was the fulness of joy,' she retracted her regret, and declared she would not, were it possible, recal him from his heavenly abode.

The six weeks intervening between this time and the nuptials were chiefly devoted to bridal preparations; and those persons whose universal benevolence towards the world at large, and kind anxieties for their friends and neighbours prompt them to seek,

with an eye of diligence, for that column of the newspaper containing births, marriages, and deaths, may recollect the exact period when it announced :
