THE Author of the following Sermons was twenty-one Years CURATE of St. MARTIN'S Church, and afterwards fevenand-twenty Years LECTURER of St. BARTHOLOMEW'S Chapel, both in the Town of Birmingham. It is but Justice to him to say, they were never intended for the public Eye; but upon his Decease, in 1785, many of his Friends thought that a Volume of his Difcourfes would not be unacceptable to the Congregations for which they were compofed. A Selection has been made; and they are now printed for the Benefit of his Widow and Family, literally, in the State, in which he left them, The Critic, who fearches merely for the Elegancies of Language, and the Learned, who look for any great Depth of Erudition, or laboured Acuteness of Reafoning, may, perhaps, A 2 perhaps, be disappointed. To amuse the one, or inform the other, was not the Object of the Author. He compofed his Sermons for a different Purpose; to recommend to the Congregation under his Care, the Practice of thofe general Duties, which are to be exercifed in every Station, and which, above all others, are the most profitable and important. The plain and unaffected Style therefore, in which he wrote them, feems beft fuited to the Defign. That good Senfe and Piety, which were the Characteristics of the Author when living, run through the whole of his Compofitions. At the advanced Period of Life of feventy-one Years, he ftill attended to the facred Duties of his Profeffion, and had the Satisfaction to receive, before he departed, a valuable and lafting Token of public Affection and Esteem, ALPHABETICAL |
