Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us:

Then the waters had overwhelmed us,

The stream had gone over our soul:

Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.

Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers:

The snare is broken, and we are escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.

PSALM 125

THEY that trust in the LORD are as mount Zion,

Which cannot be moved, but abideth for ever.

As the mountains are round about Jerusalem,

So the Lord is round about his people, from this time forth and for evermore.

For the sceptre of wickedness shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous;

That the righteous put not forth their hands unto iniquity.

Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good,

And to them that are upright in their hearts.

But as for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways,

The Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity. Peace be upon Israel.

THE TWENTY-EIGHTH DAY

MORNING WORSHIP
PSALM 126

WHEN the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion,

We were like unto them that dream.

Then was our mouth filled with laughter,

And our tongue with singing: Then said they among the nations: the LORD hath done great things for them.

The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

Turn again our captivity, O LORD, as the streams in the South. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

Though he goeth on his way weeping, bearing forth the seed;

He shall come again with joy, bringing his sheaves with him.

PSALM 127

EXCEPT the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it:

Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

It is vain for you that ye rise up early, and so late take rest, and eat the bread of toil:

[blocks in formation]

THE TWENTY-EIGHTH DAY

EVENING WORSHIP

PSALM 130

OUT of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD: Lord, hear my voice:

Let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O LORD, who shall stand?

But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared. I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait,

And in his word do I hope.

My soul looketh for the Lord, more than watchmen look for the

Happy shalt thou be, and it shall morning. be well with thee.

Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine, in the innermost parts of thine house:

Thy children like olive plants, round about thy table.

Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.

The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion:

And thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life. Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children.

Peace be upon Israel.

O Israel, hope in the LORD;
For with the Lord there is mercy,
And with him is plenteous re-
demption.

And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

PSALM 131

LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty;

Neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too wonderful for me.

Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul:

Like a weaned child with his mother,

My soul is with me like a weaned child.

O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and for evermore.

PSALM 133: 1, 3

BEHOLD, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the dew of Hermon, that cometh down upon the mountains of Zion:

For there the LORD commanded the blessing,

Even life for evermore.

PSALM 134

To him who alone doeth great wonders for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that by understanding made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that spread forth the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:

The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:

Which by night stand in the house of the Lord.

Lift up your hands to the sanctuary,

And bless ye the Lord..

The LORD bless thee out of Zion; Even he that made heaven and earth.

THE TWENTY-NINTH DAY

MORNING WORSHIP
PSALM 136: 1-9, 16, 17, 23-26

O GIVE thanks unto the LORD; for he is good:

For his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for

ever.

O give thanks unto the Lord of

ever.

To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him which smote great kings: for his mercy endureth for ever:

Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for

ever:

And hath delivered us from our adversaries: for his mercy endureth for ever.

He giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for

ever.

PSALM 138

I WILL give thee thanks with my whole heart:

Before the gods will I sing praises unto thee.

I will worship toward thy holy temple,

And give thanks unto thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth;

In the day that I called thou answeredst me,

Thou didst encourage me with strength in my soul.

All the kings of the earth shall give thee thanks, O LORD, For they have heard the words of thy mouth.

Yea, they shall sing of the ways of the LORD;

For great is the glory of the Lord; For though the LORD be high, yet hath he respect unto the lowly :

But the haughty he knoweth from afar.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,

Thou understandest my thought afar off.

Thou searchest out my path and my lying down,

And art acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.

Thou hast beset me behind and before,

And laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

It is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy spirit?

Or whither shall I flee from thy

Though I walk in the midst of presence? trouble, thou wilt revive me;

Thou shalt stretch forth thy hand against the wrath of mine enemies, And thy right hand shall save me. The Lord will perfect that which concerneth me:

Thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for

ever;

Forsake not the works of thine own hands.

THE TWENTY-NINTH DAY

EVENING WORSHIP

PSALM 139

O LORD, thou hast searched me,

and known me.

If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there:

If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

me,

Even there shall thy hand lead

And thy right hand shall hold

me.

If I say, Surely the darkness shall overwhelm me, and the light about me shall be night;

Even the darkness hideth not from thee,

But the night shineth as the day: The darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

For thou didst form my inward parts.

Thou didst knit me together in my mother's womb.

I will give thanks unto thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:

Wonderful are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

My frame was not hidden from thee, when I was made in secret, And curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance, and in thy book were all my members written,

Which day by day were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God!

How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand:

When I awake, I am still with thee.

Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God:

Depart from me therefore, ye bloodthirsty men.

For they speak against thee wickedly,

And thine enemies take thy name in vain.

Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee?

And am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?

I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart:

Try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any way of wickedness in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting.

THE THIRTIETH DAY

MORNING WORSHIP
PSALM 145

I WILL extol thee, my God, O King;

And I will bless thy name for ever and ever.

Every day will I bless thee; And I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised;

And his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall laud thy works to another,

And shall declare thy mighty

acts.

Of the glorious majesty of thine honour,

And of thy wondrous works, will I meditate.

And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts;
