Marks Honours borne on the Colours. Ed.i 5 PREFACE It has been my pleasure and my privilege to write the History of this distinguished Regiment. It was a great thing for the Regiment to be associated with the greatest soldier who ever served in the British Army; but none who read this story of the doings of the 33rd will fail to realise that among the many Regiments of the British Army which have made themselves illustrious, the Duke of Wellington's Regiment stands level with the best. It has been thought advisable to close the present volume at the point where the South African War came to a close. The after doings of the Regiment can be treated later. In matters doubtful I have relied on the History of the British Army, by the Hon. John Wm. Fortescue, whose authority on military matters is acknowledged to be ultimate. I have at the same time to acknowledge my indebtedness to the many soldiers and others connected with the Regiment for information on points which have made clear much that would otherwise have been obscure or incomplete. I cannot adequately express my keen appreciation of the assistance rendered to me by Colonel Duke and Mr. F. E. Wallis. The latter's contribution adds greatly to the value of the History, for he undertook the preparation of what I esteem an unusually able paper in the Appendix on the Uniform of the 33rd, as well as the compilation of lists on the Succession of Colonels, etc. These, also, are found in the Appendix.
